TJ JV Volleyball Team — Great Season End!
The TJ JV Volleyball Team ends on a high note with a win! This great win followed two away losses against Stone Bridge on 10/20/2008 and McLean on 10/22/2008.
The final game of the season, TJ's last home game held on Senior Night, 10/23/2008, was against the South Lakes Seahawks. This final game determined whether the TJ JV Volleyball Team would have an even or losing season.
The Colonials lost the first set 24 (TJ) – 26 (SL), but rallied back to win the 2nd set 26 (TJ) – 24 (SL). With this added momentum, TJ fought for the 3rd set and won: 15 (TJ) – 12 (SL). Co-Captain Sophomore Limor Steinberg led the ace count with 4, followed by Co-Captain Junior Biqi Zhang with 3, Sophomores Candice Kaplan with 2, and Kaitlin Kressin and Sara Gokturk each with 1. Sophomores Shannon Eriksson and Rachel Nissen led the kill count with 3 each, followed by Biqi Zhang and Sophomore Sara Gokturk each with 2, and Sophomores Candice Kaplan, Kaitlin Kressin and Rebecca Kolkmeyer with 1 kill each.
For the season, Biqi Zhang led the ace count, followed by Candice Kaplan, Sara Gokturk, Limor Steinberg, Shannon Eriksson, Rebecca Kolkmeyer, Kaitlin Kressin, and Freshman Anna Hicks. The season kill count was led by Rachel Nissen, followed by Shannon Eriksson, Biqi Zhang, Candice Kaplan, Sara Gokturk, Rebecca Kolkmeyer, Kaitlin Kressin, and Limor Steinberg. Throughout the season there were terrific digs, especially by Limor Steinberg, Candice Kaplan, and Freshman Ashley Paek, and fantastic sets by Rebecca Kolkmeyer and Sara Gokturk. Rounding out the team is Soo Han and Lydia Luu. The final record is even with 7 wins – 7 losses. Great team playing all season by the TJ JV Volleyball Team!
TJ JV Volleyball Team — Dig Pink Win!
Dig Pink, a volleyball event to promote breast cancer research, was held at TJ on 10/14/2008. The Colonials wore pink volleyball shirts, decorated the gym with pink balloons and streamers, and gave out pink candy and volleyballs to promote this important cause.
For Dig Pink, The JV Colonials hosted the Woodson Cavaliers, who also wore pink, and won in 2 sets by the same scores: 25 (TJ) – 15 (W) and 25 (TJ) – 15 (W). Sophomore Kaitlin Kressin closed the 1st set with 3 final serves — the last one being an ace! The 2nd set was tight until Junior Co-Captain Biqi Zhang's serving brought the team from 12-12 to a lead of 16-12. Sophomore Candice Kaplan closed the set with 7 consecutive serves! Candice Kaplan and Biqi Zhang led the ace count with 3 each, followed by Sophomores Shannon Eriksson, Kaitlin Kressin, and Co-Captain Limor Steinberg each with 2. Sophomore Rachel Nissen led the kill count with 5, followed by Sophomores Sara Gokturk with 4, and Limor Steinberg, Candice Kaplan, Shannon Eriksson, and Junior Biqi Zhang with 2 each.
The current record is 6 wins – 5 losses, and 2 wins – 2 losses in the Liberty District. Great playing by all — including outstanding pink digs by Limor Steinberg and Candice Kaplan. Great job, both with the win and Dig Pink event, by the TJ JV Volleyball Team!
TJ JV Volleyball Team — Cool under Pressure!
Another 3-set close loss at home for the TJ JV Volleyball Team on 10/7/08 against the Fairfax Rebels: 21 (TJ) – 25 (F); 25 (TJ) – 23 (F); and 11 (TJ) – 15 (F). Leading in the ace count was Sophomore Rebecca Kolkmeyer with 4, followed by Sophomores Sara Gokturk, Kaitlin Kressin, and Junior Co-Captain Biqi Zhang each with 2, and Sophomore Co-Captain Limor Steinberg with 1. Leading the kill count were Sophomores Candice Kaplan and Shannon Eriksson with 4 each, followed by Rebecca Kolkmeyer and Biqi Zhang with 2 each, and Sophomore Rachel Nissen with 1. The current record is 5 wins – 5 losses. While all played great, notable in this game was Rebecca Kolkmeyer. After a heart-breaking close 1st set loss, and being down 18-23 in the 2nd set, Rebecca Kolkmeyer stayed cool under pressure and closed out the set for the win, serving 7 times with 4 aces! It was an exciting game with great playing by the TJ JV Volleyball Team!
TJ JV Volleyball Team — Excellent Playing!
The TJ JV Volleyball Team hosted the Madison Warhawks on 10/6/08. Unfortunately, luck was with the Warhawks and the Colonials lost in 3 close sets: 25 (TJ) – 20 (M); 23 (TJ) – 25 (M); and 9 (TJ) – 15 (M). Sophomore Sara Gokturk led the ace count with 5 for the game, followed by Sophomores Shannon Eriksson with 3, Co-Captain Limor Steinberg with 2, Candice Kaplan with 2, and Kaitlin Kressin with 1. Sophomore Rachel Nissen led the kill count with 7, followed by Sophomores Shannon Eriksson with 6, Kaitlin Kressin with 3, Candice Kaplan with 2, Sara Gokturk with 2, Limor Steinberg with 1, Rebecca Kolkmeyer with 1, and Junior Co-Captain Biqi Zhang with 1. The current Colonial record is 5 wins – 4 losses overall and 1 win – 2 losses in the Liberty District. TJ played fantastic — with great digs, terrific serves and outstanding team-playing. Excellent playing by the TJ JV Volleyball Team!
TJ JV Volleyball Team — Another Win on the Road!
For the 2nd time this week, the TJ JV Volleyball Team won in 2 sets on the road. On 9/28/08, the Colonials defeated the Falls Church Jaguars at Falls Church HS in 2 sets: 25 (TJ) – 21 (FC); and 25 (TJ) – 10 (FC). Co-Captain Junior Biqi Zhang led in the ace count with 4, followed Sophomores Candice Kaplan and Shannon Eriksson with 3 each, Sara Gokturk with 2, and Co-Captain Limor Steinberg and Rebecca Kolkmeyer with 1 each. The kill count was led by Biqi Zhang with 4, Shannon Eriksson with 3, followed by Candice Kaplan, Rebecca Kolkmeyer and Sophomore Rachel Nissen, each with 2. The current Colonial record is 5 wins – 3 losses overall and 1 win – 1 loss in the Liberty District. Great job by all on the TJ JV Volleyball Team!
TJ JV Volleyball Team - Win on the Road!
The TJ JV Volleyball Team racked up another win. On 9/22/08, the Colonials defeated the Marshall Statesmen at Marshall in two sets, 25 (TJ) – 6 (M), and 25 (TJ) – 20 (M). Sophomore Candice Kaplan was the closer for both sets, with 20 serves for the game. Candice Kaplan also led the ace count with 8, followed by Junior Biqi Zhang with 5, then Sophomores Rebecca Kolkmeyer with 3, Kaitlin Kressin with 2, and Shannon Eriksson with 1. Candice Kaplan and Biqi Zhang tied in the number of kills, 2 each, followed by Shannon Eriksson and Sophomore Rachel Nissen, with 1 each. This win puts the JV record at 4 wins – 3 losses overall and 1 win – 1 loss in the Liberty District. The TJ JV Volleyball Team win was a team effort, and all played exceptional!
TJ JV Volleyball — Two 3-Set Home Battles (L&W)!
The TJ JV Colonials had another close loss on 9/15/08 at home versus the Herndon Hornets. The battle was fought in three sets: 17 (TJ) – 25 (H); 26 (TJ) – 24 (H); and 11 (TJ) – 15 (H). Excellent playing by all! Leading in aces were Candice Kaplan with 3, and Shannon Eriksson, Biqi Zhang, and Sara Gokturk, each with 1. Leading in kills were Shannon Eriksson with 4, Rachel Nissen with 3, Biqi Zhang with 2, Candice Kaplan with 1, and Sara Gokturk with 1. A win against the Edison Eagles occurred the following day, 9/16/08, also at home. Again, the Colonials played three sets, but managed to dominate the third for the win: 16 (TJ) – 25 (E); 25 (TJ) – 18 (E); and 15 (TJ) – 8 (E). All performed exceptional, with notable playing by: Sara Gokturk with 4 aces and 2 kills; Biqi Zhang with 2 aces; Shannon Eriksson with 1 ace and 2 kills; Limor Steinberg with 1 ace and 1 kill; Candice Kaplan with 1 ace; and Rachel Nissen with 1 kill. Also, as evident by the kills in both games, setters Rebecca Kolkmeyer and Sara Gokturk are top-notch. The JV record remains even at 3 wins — 3 losses (all close!). The TJ JV Volleyball Team is becoming a powerful force!
TJ JV Volleyball Team — Nail-Biter Win at Home!
On 9/11/08, the TJ JV Volleyball Team defeated the JEB Stuart Raiders in their first TJ home game in three sets, 25 (TJ) – 23 (JS), and 24 (TJ) – 26 (JS), and 15 (TJ) – 10 (JS). Leading the ace count once again was junior Biqi Zhang with 6 for the game, and sophomores Candice Kaplan with 3, Limor Steinberg with 2, Sara Gokturk with 1, and freshman Anna Hicks with 1. Biqi Zhang also led in kills, 5 for the game, followed by sophomores Candice Kaplan and Rachel Nissen, each with 4, and Shannon Erickson and Rebecca Kolkmeyer, each with 1. Winning this nail-biter at home puts the JV record even at 2 wins – 2 losses. Good job to all JV Colonials!
TJ JV Volleyball Team — Win in 2!
On 9/8/08, The TJ JV Volleyball Team defeated the Hayfield Hawks at Hayfield in two sets, 25 (TJ) – 17 (HHS), and 25 (TJ) – 17 (HSS). All the Colonials played great and improved their serving immensely. Leading the ace count was junior Biqi Zhang with 12 for the game, and sophomores Limor Steinberg with 4, Candice Kaplan with 3, Shannon Eriksson and Sara Gokturk both with 2, and Rebecca Kolkmeyer with 1. Sophomore Rachel Nissen's kill secured the final point of the game. With its exceptional team playing, the TJ JV Volleyball Team looks forward to a successful season!
TJ JV Volleyball Team – Playing Great!
The TJ JV Volleyball Team is playing great! The Colonials won their first home scrimmage against the Mount Vernon Majors on 8/25/08, in 2 sets, 25 (TJ) – 13 (MV), 25 (TJ) - 13 (MV), and played one more, which they also won, 15 (TJ) – 6 (MV). Unfortunately, some bad luck forced a loss in their second home scrimmage against the Wakefield Warriors on 8/27/08, 20 (TJ) – 25 (WHS), 13 (TJ) – 25 (WHS), 5 (TJ) – 15 (WHS). More bad luck followed as the Colonials were forced to face two of the top teams in the area — Westfield and Langley — in their houses. TJ lost to the Westfield Bulldogs at Westfield in 2 sets on 9/3/08. A closer match was against the Langley Saxons. At Langley, TJ forced Langley past 25, but lost the first set, 24 (TJ) – 26 (LHS); the second set also ended close, 20 (TJ – 25 (LHS). With a little good luck, either of these two sets could have been a win for TJ. Both of these teams were formidable opponents; with 12 more matches to go, the TJ JV Volleyball Team looks like it will have a great season!
