Liberty District Championships

TJ swimmers and divers brought home an overall fourth place finish for both boys and girls, as well as some school records at the snow-shortened Liberty District championships on Friday night at Audrey Moore pool. Sophomore Stephen Seliskar (McLean) broke a school record from 2000 in the 200 yard freestyle, and the boys 200 freestyle relay of Seliskar and seniors Alex Dona (Alexandria), Joey Bouchard (Annandale) and Matt Callahan (Vienna) also bested a school record with a time that merits All-American Consideration. Well done boys!

TJ had many top 10 finishers contributing points, including all four of our seniors entered in the boys 50 Free – Callahan, Bouchard, Sam Speers (McLean) and Steven Howard (Oakton). All of TJ's boys and girls relay teams will advance to the Northern Regional championship meet this week. The top six individual places from this meet also advance, as well as swims with a regional cut time in any dual meet this season. Advancing for the boys in individual events will be Callahan, Bouchard, Dona, Seliskar, and Speers. Individual girls advancing to the regional meet include diver Emily Saitta, and swimmers Katie Bennett (Arlington), Aedan Collins (McLean), Mary Kate Dilworth (Clifton), and Anna Lan (McLean).

TJ takes on Madison and Fairfax

The TJ swim and dive teams contend with the best against strong Liberty District competition.

Following a 4-0 start, the boys lost the next two meets against powerhouses Madison and Fairfax, losing to Fairfax by only 3 points. In action against Fairfax, double winners for the boys were Alex Dona (Alexandria), Matt Callahan (Vienna), and Stephen Seliskar (McLean), with Callahan clocking a state-meet qualifying time in the 100 Back. The boys 200 Medley Relay with Seliskar, Callahan, Dona and Sam Speers (McLean) had a state-qualifying time, placing second in a fast and exciting race. A week earlier, against Madison, Callahan and Seliskar were double winners, with Seliskar swimming a state-qualifying time in the 100 Back. Winning relays against Madison with state-qualifying times were the 400 Medley team of Seliskar, Callahan, Dona and Speers, and Speers, Dona, Seliskar and Peter Ballen (Arlington). The boys 200 Free relay of Jon Spitz (Fairfax), Steven Howard (Oakton), Joey Bouchard (Annandale) and Callahan placed second despite a time that qualifies for the regional championship meet.

Several boys relays posted times in earlier meets this season that qualify for the regional or the state meets, and Callahan, Dona, and Seliskar have qualified in multiple individual events.

The girls' team remains the only undefeated team in the Liberty District at 6-0. Against Fairfax, Katie Bennett (Arlington) was a double winner, and Sarah Graham (Fairfax) won the 200 Free and was part of the 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 back, following Anna Lan (McLean) and Brianna Kim (Fairfax). The girls 400 Free Relay also placed 1-2 with Bennett, Mary Kate Dilworth (Clifton), Grace Wang (Annandale) and Lauren Laffosse (Burke) first, and Jae Sim (Reston), Graham, Kim and Lan second. In action a week earlier against Madison, Bennett was a double winner, and posted a regional cut time in the 100 Back. The 200 Free Relay of Bennett, Leah Gonzalez (McLean), Sim and Dilworth also won. The girls won the Madison meet by a 7 point margin, counting on each swimmer and diver to battle for the highest place and points they could attain.

The final dual meet of the season is against Langley at Spring Hill Recreation Center on Friday, January 22 at 6:30pm. District, Regional and State championships follow.

TJ vs. South Lakes

Thomas Jefferson Swim and Dive continued its undefeated season with a win over South Lakes. Double winners for the Colonials were Anna Lan (McLean), Katie Bennett (Arlington), Alex Dona (Alexandria), Matt Callahan (Vienna), and Stephen Seliskar (McLean). Seliskar and Callahan both swam regional cuts in two individual events. The medley relay of Seliskar, Callahan, Dona, and Joey Bouchard (Annandale), and the 200 freestyle relay of Sam Speers (McLean), Bouchard, Seliskar, and Callahan swam regional cut times. The girls led by Megan Sagurton (Annandale) swept the 50 free and the boys led by Callahan did the same in 100 free. TJ diver Kristen Skowronski (Oak Hill) was first for the girls, and Thomas De Anda (Springfield), Chris Mercado (Springfield), Zachary Ho ((Reston), and Will Stalcup (Ashburn) swept boys' diving.

TJ vs. Stonebridge, McLean and Marshall

The TJ swim and dive teams have compiled a 3-0 start to the season. In the opening meet on December 4, TJ relays won every race against Stonebridge. For the girls, Anna Lan (McLean), Sarah Liu (Annandale), Mary Kate Dilworth (Clifton), Lauren Laffosse (Burke), Katie Bennett (Arlington), Leah Gonzalez (McLean), and Sarah Graham (Fairfax) contributed to relay wins; Lan, Bennett, and Aedan Collins (McLean) won individual events. For the boys, Joey Bouchard (Annandale), Steven Howard (Oakton), Zach Sturm ((Oak Hill), Sam Speers (McLean), Jon Spitz (Fairfax), Peter Ballen (Arlington), Jack Borsi(Herndon), and Sam Surrette (Fairfax) were on winning relays, and Evan McMurray (Alexandria), Ballen, Bouchard, Sturm, and Spitz won individual events. Stonebridge does not field a dive time, but our TJ divers contributed to strong relay swims.

Against McLean on a snowy Saturday night, TJ's depth again carried the day. For the girls, Katie Bennett, and the relay team of Leah Gonzalez, Lauren Laffosse, Brianna Kim (Fairfax), and Mary Kate Dilworth were sole first place finishers, but the team garnered decisive points with strong finishes in every race. Divers Emily Saitta (Springfield) and Kirsten Skowronski (Oak Hill) finished one-two. Top finishers against McLean for the boys were Peter Ballen, Alex Dona (Alexandria), Sam Speers, Stephen Seliskar (McLean), and Matt Callahan (Vienna). The boys won each relay with Joey Bouchard, Dona, Zach Sturm, Speers, Jon Spitz, Seliskar, Callahan, and Ballen.

Against Marshall, TJ double winners included Brianna Kim, Anna Lan, and Matt Callahan. The girls' 200 freestylers Anna Lan, Amanda Blair (McLean), Graham, and Anna Green (Lorton) swept the event. TJSD Regional cuts included the boys' 200 Medley Relay of Callahan, Howard, Dona, and Spitz and 200 Free Relay of Spitz, Speers, Bouchard, and Seliskar; Seliskar in the 200 free; Callahan in the 50 free and 100 back; and Dona in the 100 fly. The boys' 400 Free Relay swam a state-qualifying time with Dona, Bouchard, Seliskar, and Callahan.

Next contest is against South Lakes High School at Oak Marr Recreation Center on Friday, December 18 at 6:00pm.
