PLAYOFFS!
TJHSST Football finishes the 2008 season as one of the top 8 teams in Northern Virginia's Division 5.
TJ vs. South Lakes
October 31st
The Colonials traveled to South Lakes to face the Seahawks for their final district game of the season. A victory would give TJ an opportunity to make the Division 5 playoffs for the first time since 2004, and only the second time in 20 years.
The Colonials scored first on a 6 yard pass from QB Ben Daly to Daniel Barnes. South Lakes went ahead in the second quarter 7-6. TJ was able to score again just before halftime on a 5 yard run by Daly with a PAT by Evan Burch to regain the lead 13-7. The Colonials opened the second half with a fumble recovery on the Seahawks first possession by Adil Dittmer but were unable to score. TJ then had another opportunity as Sy Rashid delivered a strong hit following a mishandled punt return by South Lakes with a recovery by Jason Schwartz. They eventually were able to score in the fourth quarter on a 24 yard FG by Burch to go up 16-7, securing a playoff berth.
The Colonials amassed 238 yards of total offense with Daly passing for 199 yards and Mike Howard, Barnes and Burch combining for 18 receptions for over 70 yards each. This was possible because of the outstanding play of offensive linemen Matt Becker, Kevin Zigadlo, Adam Cho, Jordan Bundy and Lawrence Diao. The defense held South Lakes to 168 yards behind the defensive line of Joe Latta, Becker and Zigadlo, linebackers Dittmer, John Kim, Alex Shmorhun, Josh Yoon, Albert Khim and Rashid with Burch, Barnes, Howard and Quantum Wei in the secondary. Outstanding players on special teams included Timur Aleshin, Joseph Scholle, Sung-Jae Park, and Sungwon Byun.
TJ travels to Stone Bridge next Friday to face the Bulldogs for the first round of the Northern Virginia AAA Division 5 playoffs.
Senior Night: TJ vs. Stone Bridge 10/24

TJ football seniors
TJ vs. McLean
October 17, 2008
The Colonials went back on the road to face the McLean Highlanders at their Homecoming celebration before a large, enthusiastic crowd. TJ scored first on a 51 yard pass from QB Ben Daly to Mike Howard with a successful PAT by Evan Burch. The Colonials scored again in the 2nd quarter on a 2 yard pass from Daly to Howard, with Burch again converting the PAT. In the final moments of the 1st half, the Highlanders scored a touchdown to make the score 14-7 at halftime.
The 2nd half was marred by turnovers and penalties for both teams, as the Colonials remained in the lead going into the 4th quarter. McLean capitalized first when TJ gave up a safety, followed by a McLean touchdown, moving the Highlanders into the lead 16-14. A costly turnover allowed McLean to go up by another touchdown, now leading 23-14.
On the first play after regaining possession with 2½ minutes remaining, Daly connected with Burch for a 73 yard TD (Burch kick) to bring the Colonials to within 2 points. TJ kicked off to McLean and quickly recovered a fumble by the Highlanders. With 23 seconds left in the game, Daly scored on a 1 yard run (Burch kick) to give the Colonials the lead 28-23. As the clock ticked down, McLean tried three long passes, but were held scoreless by the TJ defense, giving the Colonials their 3rd victory of the season.
Defensive highlights included key fumble recoveries by Sy Rashid and Kevin Zigadlo and an interception by Burch. TJ will celebrate Senior Night next week and face the Stone Bridge Bulldogs for their last home game of the season.
Evan Burch Recognized as Washington Post Top Performer
The Washington Post listed Evan Burch as one of the week's "Top Performers" on October 14th for his outstanding play as TJ's kicker in the game vs. the Marshall Statesmen, with two field goals and four PATs. In that game, Burch also played wide receiver and added two touchdowns for the Colonials, scoring a total of 22 of TJ's 34 game winning points.
Homecoming: TJ vs. Marshall
October 10, 2008
The Colonials were determined to bounce back from a loss to the Wakefield Warriors on the road and returned home to face the Marshall Statesman. The stands were filled with an enthusiastic crowd for homecoming with many former TJ football alumni back to support the team. The Colonials recovered the opening kickoff and then scored on a 2 yard run by QB Ben Daly with a successful PAT by Evan Burch. Marshall was able to even the score in the second quarter followed by 24 unanswered points by the Colonials. Burch broke away for 2 TDs on runs of 71 and 88 yards and added 3 more points with a 22 yard FG. Daly scored again on a 1 yard run. Each of the TDs was followed by a successful PAT by Burch. At the start of the halftime homecoming festivities, TJ led by a score of 31-7. The second half was a defensive battle until TJ was able to add 3 more points in the fourth quarter on a 28 yard FG by Burch. The Colonials defense was outstanding, holding the Statesman to 140 yards total offense and just 7 points.
TJ will face the McLean Highlanders away next Friday evening.
Scholastic Player of the Week

Senior Mike Howard has been selected as the Washington Redskins/Allstate Scholastic Player of the Week. A 1st Team All District Defensive player for the Colonials and three-time All Region wrestler, Mike will appear on WUSA Channel 9's "Redskins Players Club" on Saturday, 10/4/08, at noon. The award includes a $1000 contribution to the TJHSST athletic program.
TJ vs. Wakefield
October 3, 2008
The Colonials remained on the road and faced the Wakefield Warriors who scored 9 points in the 1st quarter on a TD and safety. Late in the 2nd quarter Mike Howard intercepted a pass on the Colonials 20 yard line and TJ was able to drive downfield to score on a 34 yard FG by Evan Burch to go into halftime trailing 9-3. In the 3rd quarter, the Colonials scored on a 49 yard TD run by Alex Shmorhun and a successful PAT by Burch to take the lead 10-9. Several costly turnovers were their undoing in the 4th quarter as the Warriors scored 28 points to win 37-10. TJ will return home next Friday to face the Marshall Statesman at Homecoming.
TJ vs. Madison — September 26th
The Colonials faced a fired up Madison Warhawks team at their homecoming game in what has become the weather of the season — heavy rain. Although the Colonials matched the Warhawks in total offensive yardage, 5 costly turnovers were their undoing. Down by 28 points at the end of the first half, TJ was able to rally for 2 touchdowns in the second half. The first score came on a 1 yard run by QB Ben Daly followed by a PAT by Evan Burch playing in a forearm cast. They were able to score again on a 10 yard pass from Daly to Mike Howard followed by a successful 2 point conversion on a pass from Daly to Alex Shmorhun. Despite the success in the second half, Madison prevailed 42-15. The Colonials begin the second half of the season away at Wakefield next Friday and hope to return several injured players to the lineup.
TJ vs. Woodson — September 19th
The Colonials came out strong in the first quarter in a home game vs. the Woodson Cavaliers. Down by 7 points halfway through the 1st quarter, TJ scored on their first drive of the game as Josh Yoon carried the ball 34 yards for a touchdown. On their 2nd possession, Colonials QB Ben Daly completed a 44 yard pass to Daniel Barnes for another touchdown. In the 4th quarter, Daly hit Sy Rashid for the Colonials' 3rd TD and Yoon ran the ball in for the 2 point conversion. The Cavaliers capitalized on several TJ turnovers and won the game 57-20.
TJ vs. Mt. Vernon — September 12th
In their first game on the road, TJ faced the Mt. Vernon Majors who finished as runner-up in the National District in 2007. Matt Becker had several key defensive plays for TJ on the line, but the Majors gained 233 yards on the ground to win the game 38-0.
Langley Edges TJ Late in the 4th Quarter, 28-21
September 5, 2008
After a 28-0 loss to Langley in 2007, the Colonials rallied to challenge a strong Saxons team. Following a scoreless 1st quarter, Langley capitalized on a TJ turnover to score the 1st TD. The Colonials quickly answered with a 30 yard TD pass from Ben Daly to Mike Howard (Burch kick). Langley scored again late in the 1st half and TJ took possession with less than 3 minutes remaining. With a 33 yard strike from Daly to Evan Burch (Burch kick) the Colonials tied the game at 14-14 going into halftime.
In the 2nd half, TJ received the opening kickoff and drove 80 yards to score the go-ahead TD with a pass from Daly to Burch (Burch kick). This 60-yard completion was made possible by a crushing open field block by Sy Rashid on TWO Langley defenders. Threatening to tie the score, Langley sent a long pass deep into TJ territory which was intercepted by Howard. In the 3rd quarter Langley was able to regain control of the ball, and tied the score at 21-21. Both teams traded possessions in the 4th quarter, until Langley scored in the final 3 minutes of the game. Despite an intensified downpour from Tropical Storm Hanna, TJ was able to drive again into Saxon territory, but time expired.
Leading the Colonials offense in yardage were Daly (16-36, 265 yds, 3TD), Burch, Howard, Alex Shmorhun, and Daniel Barnes, behind another strong performance by the O-line: Kevin Zigadlo, Adam Cho, Matt Becker, Timur Aleshin and Jordan Bundy. On special teams, Mike Kim and Quantum Wei made key tackles against the Saxons on kickoff returns. The Colonial defense had another outstanding performance led by linebackers John Kim, Shmorhun, Jason Schwartz, Albert Khim, and Adil Dittmer. On the line, Joe Latta, Kevin Zigadlo and Matt Becker made crucial tackles on Langley's running backs. Also contributing to the defensive effort in the secondary were Burch, Howard and Daniel Barnes.
TJ Defeats Falls Church 28 – 27 in Overtime Season Opener!
Thursday, August 28, 2008
The Varsity football team opened the season with an exciting 28-27 overtime victory over Falls Church (FC). The first play of the game saw TJ's special teams unit blast through the FC line for a 77 yard kickoff return by Mike Howard. Three plays later, QB Ben Daly completed a 13-yard pass to Evan Burch to put TJ on the scoreboard (Burch kick). Falls Church answered with a touchdown and the score was tied 7-7 at the end of the 1st quarter. Josh Yoon recovered an FC fumble which led to the Colonials' second TD. Daly connected with Yoon for a 12-yard TD (Burch kick) to take the lead 14-7. Falls Church then scored twice. On another outstanding play by TJ's special teams, Yoon blocked an FC extra point attempt. With minutes left in the first half and down by 7 points, Daly fired another pass to Burch for a 40 yard TD (Burch kick), tying the score at 21-21. Defensive highlights included key tackles behind the FC line by John Kim, Adil Dittmer and Matt Becker.
A solid performance by the offensive line of Adam Cho, Becker, Kevin Zigadlo, Timur Aleshin and Lawrence Diao contributed to the Colonials' explosion in offensive yardage by Daly, Burch, Howard, Yoon, Dittmer, Daniel Barnes and Alex Shmorhun.
In the 3rd quarter, FC completed a pass deep in TJ territory, but Howard stripped the ball from the FC receiver on the TJ 5-yard line and John Kim recovered the fumble. Neither team scored in the 2nd half and the game went into overtime. On their first possession, Daly scored a TD for the Colonials on a five-yard run (Burch kick). FC answered with a TD and lined up for a 2-point conversion to win the game. Adil Dittmer's perfectly timed pass deflection derailed FC's conversion attempt in overtime to preserve the victory for TJ.
