TJ JV vs Wakefield — final game!

November 3, 2008

The Jefferson JV squad lost a heartbreaker against a bigger and deeper Wakefield squad Monday night, playing a game delayed from earlier in the season. It was a matchup of Jefferson's strong passing and defense against a brutal running game put on by Wakefield. This was a great way to close the season, regardless of the score.

Jefferson opened the contest with a 55-yard drive for a touchdown and two-point conversion on a quarterback scramble. Wakefield answered with their own long drive, only to have their star running back release the ball on the five-yard line, apparently believing he had crossed the goal line. Unfortunately, Wakefield recovered from this comic relief. They recovered the fumble, scored and tied the game 8-8. In the second quarter, Jefferson missed a scoring opportunity when Wakefield fumbled on their own 45. Jefferson's fake punt on fourth down failed to convert, and Wakefield came back with a long touchdown run, but missed the conversion. Things looked grim for TJ in the closing minutes of the first half when a blocked punt gave Wakefield the ball on the Colonials' 17. But the defense held, and teams went into the half with a score of 8-14.

Jefferson came out of the halftime charged up. In a long drive that began with a beautiful 25-yard pass, Wakefield was called twice for encroachment. That set up another 20-yard pass to Mark Lee for the touchdown. This time the quarterback scramble didn't work, though, and the score was tied at 14-14 going into the fourth quarter. Wakefield scored again on the strength of their running game and again failed to grab the point-after, leaving a win still in reach for TJ at 14-20. With only four minutes left in the game, Jefferson made one last push to a possible victory, showing an impressive mix of running and passing. The line continued to provide the quarterback with great pass protection. Sadly, the drive was interrupted on the Colonials' 10-yard line. Wakefield proceeded to run the clock down and, after a lucky spot on third down, seemed to be guaranteed the victory with first down and 1:14 on the clock.

The Colonials, however, had one last chance. Recalling the varsity squad's exciting last-minute fumble recovery and win against McLean earlier in the season, the defense took the field determined to save the game. The Colonials forced a fumble by Wakefield in the backfield on the first play from scrimmage. Unlike the McLean game, though, Jefferson came up inches short in attempting to recover the loose ball. Wakefield learned its lesson and kneeled the ball on the next play, for a final score of 14-20.

TJ JV vs South Lakes — a Spooktacular Game!!

October 30, 2008

On a crisp cool night before Halloween, TJ JV Colonials football fans were treated to an exciting contest between their Colonials and the visiting Seahawks from South Lakes. The game began with a trick squib kickoff, which immediately led to a fumble recovery by our adept and agile special teams squad. A haunted defensive battle ensued throughout the first quarter, with the score 0-0 at the break. The second quarter had our defense continuing to play Stingy Jack, making numerous monstrous plays and 4th-down stops. The offense had a sweet 60+ yard drive, which included a stunning 4th-down conversion and a long pass reception that put our boys knocking at the door! The Seahawks were howling as we punched it in for the TD. At the half, another spirited performance by the JV cheerleading squad had the fans rocking in the stands and singing along to their bewitching chants.

The second half began with a penalty-fraught offensive possession by TJ, which led to a Seahawk TD. The big-D came through again, stopping the 2-point conversion. The offense shook off the demons and got back to business, moving the chains regularly. An incredible fake punt pass reception for a first down was the highlight of the 3rd quarter, which ended with the score tied at a mummified 6 apiece. The 4th quarter led off with a super-long punt that was fumbled and nearly recovered by our special-teams crew. Yet another 4th down stop by our defensive devils had the Seahawks eating crow. The scariest moment occurred on the second to last play of the game, when the Seahawks played a nasty trick on us and completed a long flea-flicker to the 1-yard line. A frightful ending was averted by an amazing game saving goal-line stand with 8 seconds to go. Unfortunately, there was no OT to hallow a victor and the teams left the gridiron with a 6-6 tie (leaving time for our remarkable student-athletes to get some homework done!).

Freshman Football

The Freshman Colonials record may not show a winning season — but if effort and team spirit count for anything — they are unbeatable!

This past weeks game against #1 Stone Bridge was a perfect example. Our Freshman Defense held the Bulldogs to just two touchdowns — and Stone Bridge had the home field advantage.

TJ frosh football at Stone Bridge

Another nail-biter, the Freshman held their ground, and at the end of the first quarter, there was still no score.

Mike Taylor, the newest Freshman quarterback — as Ian Ladner moved up to JV — did a great job of handing off and passing, and our Freshman gained some serious yardage.

End of 2nd quarter — Stone Bridge up by 8.

Tom Hillenbrand caught an interception in the 4th quarter that brought the stands to their feet. Could this be it? Could we actually beat Stone Bridge? What motivation a win would be for both the JV and Varsity Teams!

While we didn't pull off the win, we did score in the final seconds of the game to avoid a shut-out. Final score — 16-6 — but the Freshman Colonials couldn't have been more proud — and neither could the parents!

The Freshman Colonials finish out this season this week with a Thursday evening home game against South Lakes at 6:00 p.m., and a Monday evening home make-up game against Wakefield at 6:00 p.m.

Come out and show your support for the Freshman Colonials, who could very well be the future "rising stars" of the TJ Football Program.

TJ JV vs McLean — Great Effort!

October 17,2008

The squad put forth a valiant effort against a McLean team that outnumbered them three to one. As usual, many of the JV men played both sides of the ball and put up a strong defense. After McLean scored 12 points in the first quarter, the defense held them to only one other score in the third quarter. The offensive highlight of the game came in the fourth quarter, when the Colonials put together an impressive touchdown drive. Long runs by Daniel Yoo and a 20-yard completion from Ian Ladner to Luke Birch were made possible by impressive protection from Jefferson's front line, and TJ made the two-point conversion. Despite being in the game until the end, however, TJ lost 18-8.

Next up, the JV squad will travel to Stone Bridge (Thursday, October 23), then will take on South Lakes at home on Thursday, October 30. The Wakefield game that was postponed earlier in the season due to wet field conditions will be rescheduled for early November. Stay tuned for the date and time!

TJ JV vs Marshall

October 7, 2008

It was a defensive struggle on October 7 against Marshall. The TJ offense moved the ball well with 8 first downs in the game. The defense had much to be proud about; the Colonials held the Statesmen scoreless until the waning seconds of the first half. Joe Scholle had a fumble recovery and made several stops behind the line of scrimmage. In the end, TJ was left on the short end of a 16-0 game.

TJ JV Football Scores its First TD This Season!

With time running out in the game against the Woodson Cavaliers, the TJHSST Colonials found themselves on their own 21-yard line. From the shotgun position, Sungwon Byun faked right and then rolled left. The short pass hit Alex Harasty between the numbers for a seemingly short gain to the 27-yard line. As three Cavaliers converged, Alex lateralled to Daniel Yoo who was at the 25-yard line with a full head of steam. Without being touched, Daniel cruised down the sideline for a 75-yard touchdown. The team went wild, the TJ faithful went wild, and the cheerleaders did pushups! The Cavaliers got the ball back but without enough time to score. TJ lost, 42 – 6, but the dramatic touchdown at the end gave the players, fans, and even the coaches something to smile about!

TJ JV vs. Mount Vernon 9/11

The JV squad put up a valiant effort against a bigger and more numerous Mount Vernon squad tonight, with most of the Colonials playing both sides of the ball all night. The TJ offense moved the ball well on the ground, and our offensive line stood up to a Mount Vernon front of almost twice their weight. The defense likewise held their own and, but for a couple of huge breakaway runs by Mount Vernon in the first half, would have kept the game much closer. Although the final score was 38-0, Mount Vernon scored only eight points in the second half, which bodes well for next week's game.
