Team Results
Districts: Varsity vs. McLean
TJ lost a close contest 2-1 to the McLean Highlanders. The Colonials got off to a slow start and McLean took advantage while dictating play for the first 15 minutes. After numerous penalty corners and constant pressure, McLean scored on a back door goal to go ahead 1-0. They added to their lead on a score off of a penalty corner making the score 2-0. After a timeout, the TJ regrouped and the game became more even. Allison Smedberg scored a goal to make the contest 2-1 at halftime. In the second half, TJ played hard and had several scoring chances but couldn't find the back of the goal. It was a disappointing end to the season but the team played hard until the final whistle.
Varsity vs. South Lakes
The Lady Colonials beat South Lakes 7-0 on Senior night. The game was also the final regular season game. Allison Smedberg led the scoring with 3 goals, with Katy Williamson, Allie Ivener, and Allie Brouckman also scoring. After the first 5 minutes which was fairly even, TJ dominated play the rest of the game and kept constant pressure on the Seahawks. Thank you to our seniors for all their efforts this season. Graduating seniors are Emily Kehne, Katie Martinez, Hope Smith, Anna Stapleton, Megan Tetlow and Katy Williamson. Good luck to you all.
Varsity vs. McLean
TJ lost 2-1 in a close contest. The Colonials went ahead 1-0 in the first half on a goal by Katy Williamson. Play was pretty even for the half with both teams working hard. In the second half, TJ couldn't convert on their scoring chances and McLean wore down the TJ back line defense. McLean scored two goals in a 5 minute period to win the game.
JV Finishes Season with 2 Wins, 6 Ties, 2 Losses
In spite of another disappointing cancellation of their final game against South Lakes due to rain, the JV team should be proud of their season. Earlier in the week, they played hard against a strong McLean team, generating a lot of offense, shots, and corners while at the same time fending off several speedy McLean breakaways. The game ended 0-0. As a result, their final record is 2 wins, 6 ties, and 2 losses. Way to go TJ!
Varsity vs. Fairfax
TJ lost a close game to Fairfax. The winning goal was scored on a penalty stroke in the second half. Both teams had scoring chances but were unable to finish on goal. The Colonials had an opportunity to tie the game late on a penalty corner but were unable to keep the ball in the circle and the Rebels ran out the clock.
JV Ties Fairfax
The JV team managed to keep the ball in the Fairfax end for much of the game. In the first half, the ball was even on the goal line at one point. There were several fantastic crosses, shots and opportunities to score, including a whole string of corners in the second half, but the Fairfax defense managed to thwart all TJ's efforts. The Fairfax team did come out strong at the start of the second half, had a few exciting runs down the side, and made one breakaway rush up the center right at the end of the game, but all these attempts were deftly handled by the TJ defense! The score ended 0-0.
Varsity vs. Langley
The Lady Colonials won an exciting contest 1-0 over a deep and determined Langley team. TJ scored in the first half on a penalty corner goal by Hope Smith. The defense then turned away numerous attacks by the Langley offense and TJ went into halftime with the lead. In the second half, Langley continued to apply pressure but the defense continued to stop the attack. The entire defense played well as a unit in the game.. Katie Martinez had several nice saves in goal and Erin Corey played especially well at sweeper. TJ's offense had a few opportunities to score in the second half, but the Langley defense played well and kept the contest close.
JV Continues A Successful Season!
After a disappointing cancellation with Wakefield, who is not fielding a JV team this year, the TJ JV team came out strong against Marshall. The defense continued to show strength, especially in a late second half break-away by Marshall. In spite of a lot of offensive action by TJ, the score ended up 0-0.
The team followed up with a strong showing against Langley, whose JV is undefeated. Rheem Brooks in goal had a fantastic game, and both offense and defense matched the Langley effort. Unfortunately, the score ended 0-1 Langley, but TJ's effort was impressive!
Varsity vs. Marshall
TJ lost 2-1 in overtime to Marshall. The Colonials never seemed to get any momentum throughout the game. Falling behind 1-0, they were able to tie the score on a goal by Allison Smedberg. After trading goals in regulation the game went to overtime. Marshall won the game on a goal scored after a penalty corner a few minutes into the extra period.
Varsity vs. Wakefield
The Lady Colonials completely dominated the contest against Wakefield, winning 6-0. Three goals scored in rapid succession in the first half decided the contest early. Amber Kuo had two goals in the game, while Allie Ivener, Allison Smedberg, Hope Smith and Taylor Enders all scored in a balanced TJ attack. The ball rarely left the offensive end in the game.
Varsity vs. Edison
In a hard fought contest TJ prevailed 2-1. Edison dominated play in the first half and the Colonial's defense came up big to keep the score 0-0. Late in the first half, the contest became more even and Allie Ivener scored for the Colonials to give them a 1-0 halftime lead. TJ came out strong to start the second half, dominating play for the most part. Hope Smith put TJ ahead 2-0. The Eagles rallied for a late goal with about 3 minutes to play, which energized their offense. Once again, the defense rallied to secure the win.
JV Beats Edison
The JV team is really coming together. At Edison, their efforts to generate offense really paid off. At the end of the first half, Laura Brouckman scored off a corner. During the second half, Katy Burgio netted two goals for TJ. Both offense and defense were extremely effective throughout the game. Great job JV!
Varsity vs. Washington-Lee
TJ played well and scored a 3-0 win over the Generals. Elizabeth Pina opened the scoring to put the Colonials ahead 1-0 in the first half. Hope Smith scored the second goal on a corner in the second half. Finally with about 12 minutes left in the second half Elizabeth Pina scored the 3rd goal on a nice assist from Taylor Enders to put the game away. The defense again played well and kept the Generals from scoring.
JV Posts First Win!
On a beautiful fall night, the JV field hockey team posted their first win against Washington-Lee. After a strong start, midway through the first half, a corner received and played by Connie Scoggins was worked by the offensive line and placed in the net by wing Brittany Peck! Great teamwork TJ! Throughout the rest of the game, the team was able to generate more offense and shots while the defense remained as strong as ever, keeping the score 1-0!
Varsity vs. Westfield
TJ lost to a tough Westfield team 1-0. TJ had an opportunity to score in the first half when awarded a penalty stroke but the Westfield goalkeeper was able to stop the shot. The TJ defense played well against a constant Bulldog attack, keeping them from scoring through the first half and most of the second. The Bulldogs finally scored with about 8 minutes remaining in the game and TJ was unable to score the tying goal in the remaining time.
JV Shows Well in Opening Contests
After a day where the freshmen were busy with orientation and many of the sophomores acted as "Big Sibs", JV field hockey took the field against Madison. Madison started with an early break and goal, but the Colonials fought back, keeping the ball in the Madison end for most of the rest of the game with a determination that will serve them well in future contests! The game ended 0-1 Madison. The JV team then faced two strong opponents in Robinson and Westfield during the first week of school. There were exciting moments on both ends of the field but both contests ended in 0-0 ties. These girls are improving each time they take the field! Way to go TJ!
Varsity vs. Madison
The Lady Colonials opened District play with a 4-1 victory over Madison. TJ opened the scoring on a goal by Allie Ivener but Madison was able to tie the score before the end of the first half. In the second half, Allison Smedberg made a good run and scored a nice goal to give the Colonials the lead. Madison then began to dictate play but TJ played well defensively and kept the lead. Later in the half, Taylor Enders scored making the score 3-1 and giving the Colonials some cushion. Hope Smith converted a penalty stroke with about 4 minutes to play, which put the game out of reach.
Varsity vs. Robinson
TJ defeated the Robinson Rams 1-0 in a very close contest. Taylor Enders scored the lone goal in the first half as a result of a nice assist from Allison Smedberg. The first half saw both teams trade scoring opportunities, but again the TJ defense played well. In the second half, despite increasing offensive pressure from Robinson, TJ was able to defend numerous corners and free hits from just outside the circle. Fine team play allowed TJ to secure the victory.
Varsity vs. West Springfield
TJ kicked off the regular season with a hard fought 2-0 victory over the Spartans of West Springfield. The game was fast paced and both teams had scoring chances in the first half. TJ finally broke through with a goal by Hope Smith to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Lady Spartans came out strong in the second half and applied consistent pressure but the Colonial defense held up and played well. After a timeout, TJ came out energized and Allison Smedberg scored a goal which sealed the victory.
Way to go Colonials!
JV Scrimmages & First Game
With four strong returning players and eleven new enthusiastic sophomores and freshmen, the JV Field Hockey squad showed well in its first scrimmage against West Potomac. Katie Burgio got a ball in the net in the first half and Laura Brouckman followed with a goal in the second.
In their second scrimmage against Chantilly, TJ demonstrated great defensive strength in successfully fending off most of Chantilly’s offensive plays, resulting in a 0-1 loss.
These scrimmages paved the way for a very strong showing in their first game against West Springfield. Although the game ended in a tie, most of the activity was in the West Springfield end, and the one major West Springfield breakaway was stopped with an amazing play by goalie Rheem Brooks.
Way to start the season TJ!
Westfield Invitational
TJ had a nice showing in the Westfield Invitational, winning 3 games and losing 1. On Friday, TJ opened play with a 2-0 victory over TC Williams. The game was played in the offensive end for much of the contest and TJ was able to close out the contest with 2 nice goals.
The afternoon contest with South County was a close 1-2 loss to a
strong Stallion team. South County, playing their first game of
the day, came out strong while the Lady Colonials took a bit to
adjust to the faster pace. South County scored first but TJ
came back quickly and tied the score at 1-1 before halftime.
In the second half, the contest was more evenly matched but South
County was able to break through with a goal which was the game winner.
On Saturday, the first game of the day was against Washington and
Lee. The contest was a scoreless tie until TJ was awarded a
penalty stroke. Hope Smith converted the stroke with ease.
After that, the Lady Colonials broke the game open scoring twice more
leaving the final result at 3-0.
In the afternoon game, the Colonials took on the Edison Eagles and
dominated play from start to finish. In a 4-0 win, TJ played a
complete game on offense and the defense didn’t allow the Lady Eagles
many opportunities to score.
All in all, the tournament was a good showing at the beginning of the
season.
