Team Results

TJ Freshman Girls Basketball Record

Overall: 6:10 (without scrimmage), 7:10 (with scrimmage).
Liberty District: 5:9.

Freshman Girls Basketball — Playing Great!

The TJ Freshman Girls lost another tough battle to the Stone Bridge Bulldogs in their away game on February 15, 2008. By half-time, TJ was down, 25 (SB) – 11 (TJ). The second half was even for both the Bulldogs and the Colonials — each gaining only 10 points — but it was not enough to overcome Stone Bridge's initial lead; final score: 35 (SB) – 21 (TJ). Overall, the Colonials had excellent assists, beautiful baskets, tough defense, intimidating offense and all-around great playing.

Freshman Girls Basketball

The away game on February 12, 2008, was against the Madison Warhawks. After leading in the 1st quarter, 3 (Madison) – 4 (TJ), Madison pulled ahead in the 2nd, 10 (Madison) – 8 (TJ), which continued to the end. The final score: 25 (Madison) – 20 (TJ). Capitalizing on what they could — terrific baskets, effective pressing, awesome steals, and tremendous rebounds — the Colonials showed determination and courage to keep playing their best.

Lady JV Colonials Compete against Woodson (2/7)

In their home finale for the season, the JV girls from TJ lost a very competitive, well-played game against a very tough squad from Woodson, 42-24. Overcoming a flat second quarter — cold shooting again, the Lady JV Colonials closed to eight points to start the fourth quarter, but could not convert down the stretch. Taylor Enders (4 points, 2 steals, 3 assists) played an excellent floor game, handling the pressure defense throughout. Christina Popps (7 rebounds, 4 steals, 4 points) was a competitive force for the home team and Margaret Tarmann (8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals) lead the scoring.

Saxons are again Too Tough for TJ JV Girls (2/4)

For the second time this season, the JV girls from Langley over-matched the JV girls from TJ, prevailing decisively, 40-12.

Freshman Girls Basketball — TJ Dominated!

The TJ Freshman Girls kept the Woodson Cavaliers' starters on the court the entire home game on February 7, 2008. The 1st quarter ended 4 (TJ) – 12 (W), a vast improvement on their past match-up; with this, TJ showed the undefeated Cavaliers that the Colonials were ready to challenge. TJ played hard during the 2nd quarter, and kept Woodson to only 6 points, made by one player with outside 3-pointers, 4 (TJ) – 18(W). In the 3rd quarter, TJ scored 10 while keeping Woodson to 12: 14 (TJ) – 30 (W). In the 4th quarter, TJ gained 5 to the Cavaliers' 15; final score: 19 (TJ) – 45 (W). The score does not reflect the feel of this game — TJ dominated in all aspects except outside shooting. Woodson knew that this game could have turned in TJ's favor at any time, therefore, resigning many of its players to be benchwarmers. TJ eliminated all of Woodson's inside offense, had more rebounds, took many more viable shots, played all of its teammates, and ended the game with a beautiful 3-point basket at the buzzer! Excellent all-around playing by TJ!

Freshman Girls Basketball — Beat Langley!

As predicted from our last match-up, the TJ Freshman Girls outplayed the Langley Saxons in their thrilling home game on February 4, 2008. From the first points to the last free-throw, the Colonials dominated. The 1st quarter ended with TJ ahead, 13 (TJ) – 8 (Langley). The 2nd quarter further showcased TJ's strengths; the Colonials gained 10 points and kept the Saxons to only 4, 23 (TJ) – 12 (Langley). During the 2nd half, the Saxons gained a little, 16 points, to TJ's 14, but it was not enough to overcome TJ's lead; final score: 38 (TJ) – 27 (Langley). Overall, the Colonials outmatched the Saxons on every level: ball-handling, passing, shooting, rebounds, tight defense and great offense. The TJ Freshman Girls Team is a cohesive unit and played in perfect unison for a well-deserved win!

Marshall wins Thriller over JV Girls (2/1)

Playing their second district road game of the week, the TJ JV girls once again dug themselves a hole in the first half that proved too deep to escape from. Down by 16, the Lady JV Colonials staged a measured comeback and took the lead in the fourth quarter, but were unable to finish in the closing seconds and lost 41-38 to the Statesmen. Margaret Tarmann (15 points) and Christina Popps (11 rebounds) were key to the rally for TJ.

Freshman Girls Basketball — Sweep Statesmen!

The TJ Freshman Girls did it again! Their second sweep of the season occurred on February 1, 2008 at Marshall. The Statesmen were no match for the Colonials, even with TJ down by three of its players. By the end of the 1st quarter, TJ was ahead, 4 (Marshall) – 14 (TJ). During the 2nd quarter, both teams scored 7 points, 11 (Marshall) – 21 (TJ). TJ held Marshall to only 1 basket in the 3rd quarter while scoring 1 free-throw, 2 baskets, and one 3-pointer: 13 (Marshall) – 29 (TJ). Holding the Statesmen to only 1 more basket and gaining 3 baskets for themselves, TJ ended victorious: 15 (Marshall) – 35 (TJ). TJ played outstanding, with two 3-pointers, precise free-throws, excellent shooting by every teammate, effective presses, tight defense and smart offense. Great team-effort by TJ!

McLean Beats Lady JV Colonials (1/29)

Unable to overcome a mistake-riddled first half, playing a Highlanders team that was focused and ready to play, the girls from TJ lost at McLean, 34-21. Taylor Enders, Christina Popps and Alison Kosmacki competed well for TJ in the second half.

Freshman Girls Basketball — Great Shots!

On Jan 29, 2008, the TJ Freshman Girls played the McLean Highlanders at McLean with heart and determination. Close in the 1st quarter, 8 (McLean) – 6 (TJ), the Highlanders pulled away during the 2nd quarter, 23 (McLean) – TJ (7), due to their outside shooters. Once TJ went man-to-man in the 3rd quarter, the Colonials kept McLean to only 5 points, and scored 8: 28 (McLean) – 15 (TJ). TJ did not stick with this defense in the 4th quarter, resulting in 39 (McLean) – 15 (TJ). TJ played well with great rebounds, drives, effective defense and solid offense. The Colonials had many great shots, but luck forced them to bounce out instead of dropping in. Regardless of the score, good teamwork and commendable sportsmanship makes TJ the winning team!

Freshman Girls Basketball — Sweep Seahawks!

Overmatched from tip-off, the South Lakes Seahawks were defeated by the TJ Freshman Girls on January 25, 2008 at TJ. This is the second time the Colonials were victors against the Seahawks! With TJ's assistant coach guiding, the Colonials dominated the game. By the end of the 1st half, TJ was ahead: 17 (TJ) – 3 (South Lakes). In the 2nd half, TJ kept the Seahawks to single digits while scoring another 21 points. The Colonials handily won this home game: 38 (TJ) – 8 (Seahawks). South Lakes was no match for TJ's shots, rebounds, steals, free-throws, and all-around teamwork.

Freshman Girls Basketball Home Game

The TJ Freshman Girls lost in an ill-fated game at home on January 24, 2008 against the James Madison Warhawks. The Colonials were taller, faster, and stronger than the Warhawks, but without capitalizing on TJ's strengths, TJ was doomed; it was just a matter of time. Every quarter, Madison gained a little: 1st quarter: 8 (TJ) – 7 (Madison); 2nd quarter: 9 (TJ) – 9 (Madison); 12 (TJ) – 17 (Madison); and finally, 16 (TJ) – 19 (Madison). TJ could have easily defeated Madison and will beat Madison next time.

TJ JV Girls Defeat South Lakes (1/25)

Playing at home on consecutive nights, the JV Lady Colonials ended a 3-game losing skid with a win against the visiting Seahawks, 49-12. In a team effort, 9 of 10 players scored, led by Nicole Yu (10 points, 4 steals, 1 assist) and Melissa Reardon (7 points, 5 rebounds). Margaret Tarmann (7 rebounds, 6 points) and Anna Mazur (6 rebounds, 6 points) contributed at both ends and Helena Manguerra (2 steals, 1 assist, 5 points) was a stand-out with her perimeter and transition defense.

Madison defeats Girls from TJ (1/24)

Struggling to convert field goal attempts, and over-matched against the taller, more aggressive warhawks on defense, the Lady JV Colonials fell to defeat at home, 43-20. Tori Zupan played a strong second half, defending and rebounding, and finished with 6 points. Stephanie Valarezo was aggressive with her floor game for TJ and scored 4.

Cavaliers Ride to Victory against Lady JV Colonials (1/15)

Facing their toughest opponent to date, the JV girls from TJ were not ready to play against the Woodson Cavaliers in a 52-15 road loss. The bright spot for TJ was the play from Christina Popps, working into game form, competing impressively on both ends of the floor.

Freshman Basketball — Home Court Advantage

The TJ Freshman Girls' away game, on January 15, 2008, against the Woodson Cavaliers, did not start out well. By the end of the 1st quarter, TJ was down significantly: 28 (Woodson) – 2 (TJ). Not to be out-done, TJ rallied. In the following 3 quarters, the Colonials scored 21 points and kept Woodson to 22 more points (which was less points scored in the final 3 quarters than in the 1st quarter alone), but it was not enough to counter the earlier deficit; final score: 50 (Woodson) – 23 (TJ). Home court advantage definitely helped the Cavaliers. Even so, TJ had many beautiful baskets, free-throws, blocks, and rebounds. The Colonials are ready to face Woodson again — this time in our house!

Saxons Too Tough for JV Girls (1/11)

Out-played from the opening tip, the Lady JV Colonials lost at Langley, 51-25. The Saxons played with organization, intensity and skill in their home victory.

JV Girls Over Statesmen (1/8)

The TJ girls JV team evened their record at 3-3 with a win at home over Marshall, 39-29. Playing their best game of the season so far, they established the lead in the first half and held off a determined Marshall rally in the second half. Tori Zupan (8 rebounds, 6 points, 5 blocks) played big in the lane, Taylor Enders played a strong, complete game (13 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists), Stephanie Valarezo scored 10 points and Margaret Tarmann contributed with 11 rebounds.

Tough Home Loss for JV Girls (1/4/)

Against an organized, aggressive squad from McLean, the girls from TJ let an early lead slip away in the second quarter and were unable to recover, in a 42-34 home loss. Nora Riesenberg and Melissa Reardon led an improved team effort on defense, but strong team floor play by TJ in the second half was blunted by cold shooting. Taylor Enders and Stephanie Valarezo played solid games, contributing on both ends of the floor.

Lady JV Colonials Win at South Lakes (12/21)

In their first district road contest, the girls from TJ registered a decisive win at South Lakes, 51-5. Ten players scored for TJ in a true team effort, led by Taylor Enders (10 points, 4 assists), Nora Riesenberg (8 points, 4 rebounds), Margaret Tarmann (7 points, 6 rebounds) and Alison Kosmacki (6 points, 2 assists, 3 rebounds). Nicole Yu played a strong floor game and Tori Zupan and Brittany Borman controlled play in the lane.

TJ JV Girls Host W&L (12/14)

In a non-district game at home, the Lady JV Colonials fell to W&L, 35-21. Nora Riesenberg and Melissa Reardon turned in solid defensive efforts and Anna Mazur lead the scoring for TJ with 8 points. The home team recovered from a cold first half to close the gap to 4 points in the fourth quarter, but could get no closer in what was an improved team effort on both ends of the floor.

Stonebridge over Lady JV Colonials (12/11)

In their home opener and first district game, the Lady JV Colonials played tough team defense against an athletic Bulldog squad, but a 1-point game at half-time turned into a 33-19 defeat when TJ could not execute on offense.

TJ Girls JV Basketball Off and Running (12/4)

The JV girls basketball team went on the road to Wakefield to start their season, scoring a 47-21 win. Pressure defense set the tone in the first half in establishing solid team play throughout. Taylor Enders led the scoring with 12 points, Margaret Tarmann had 11 rebounds and 9 points and Christina Popps played strong in the post.

Freshman Girls Basketball - Unlucky on the Road

The TJ Freshman Girls could not beat the Langley High Saxons in their away-game on January 11, 2008. During the 1st quarter, TJ did not counter the Saxons' man-to-man defense, which put the Colonials behind, 17 (Langley) – 6 (TJ). While in the 2nd quarter, TJ kept the Saxons to only 3 points and scored 8, 21 (Langley) – 14 (TJ), but could not continue this streak. During the 3rd quarter, TJ gave up 13 points, and scored only 7: 34 (Langley) – 21 (TJ). The 4th quarter showed some promise, as TJ held Langley to only 4 points and scored 6, but it was too late; final score: 38 (Langley) – 27 (TJ). TJ showed excellent team playing, free-point scoring, lay-ups, and rebounds, and will be ready to face Langley again!

Freshman Girls Basketball — Impressive Win!

The George C. Marshall Lady Statesmen were no match for the TJ Freshman Girls in this TJ home game on January 8, 2008. From the starting tip-off to the last basket, the Colonials dominated. By the end of the first quarter, TJ tripled Marshall: 12 (TJ) - 4 (Marshall). In the 2nd quarter, TJ held Marshall to single digits, and increased TJ's score by 17: 29 (TJ) - 9 (Marshall). During the 3rd quarter, TJ expounded its lead and kept Marshall to only 4 points: 39 (TJ) - 13 (Marshall). In the 4th quarter, TJ held Marshall to a mere 2 points, and increased its lead by another 12 points: 47 (TJ) - 15 (Marshall). TJ Freshman Girls controlled this entire game with amazing passes, successful pressing, awesome rebounds, effective scoring, and all-around great teamwork!

Freshman Girls Basketball — Bad Luck

The TJ Freshman Girls won the starting tip-off in their home game against the McLean Highlanders on January 4, 2008. After scoring the first basket, the Colonials held the Highlanders scoreless until a foul at the end of the 1st quarter. McLean made their two free-throws, and the first quarter ended at 2 (TJ) - 2 (McLean). By the end of the 2nd quarter, McLean pulled ahead slightly, and finished with 7 - 11. During the 3rd quarter, the Highlanders effectively used their outside shooter and used a man-to-man defense. TJ did not match this strategy until the end of the 3rd quarter, but by then, the Highlanders had gained a sizable lead: 11 - 24. During the 4th quarter, TJ scored effectively, but it was not enough, ending with 19 (TJ) - 38 (McLean). Overall, TJ had many great shots, steals, rebounds, picks, and passes. McLean could not press TJ effectively, and TJ had very few turnovers. The game could have gone either way and with a little better luck TJ would have won handily.

Freshman Girls Basketball — Overpowering Win!

The South Lakes Seahawks could not match the skill and determination of the TJ Freshman Girls at South Lakes on Friday, December 21, 2007. The Colonials started aggressively with a commanding press and by the end of the first quarter were leading 2 (Seahawks) – 13 (Colonials). The Colonials did not allow the Seahawks to score in the second quarter, but increased the TJ lead to 2-31. In the third quarter, the Seahawks tried to gain some ground, but TJ answered every basket, which brought the score to 7-37. The fourth quarter showed the Colonial's best and the final score was 9-53. The TJ Freshman Girls played smart, strong, and cohesively to seize this decisive victory!

Varsity Splits First 4 Games

Varsity girls lost the 12/04 game to Wakefield and the 12/07 game to Yorktown. They came back to win the 12/11 game with Stone Bridge and the 12/14 game with Washington-Lee.

Freshman Girls Basketball — Exciting Till the End!

The TJ Freshman Girls were in a tight battle against the Washington & Lee Generals at home on December 14, 2007. The Colonials lagged behind in the first and second quarters, 6-7 and 12-14, respectively, but came back and pulled ahead by the end of the third quarter, 18-16. An exciting TJ basket, foul, and completed free-throw, followed by one last TJ basket put the final score at a close 25-27. TJ lost this nail-biter, but throughout the game, the Colonials played awesome and even had more baskets — the Generals won the game by their effective use of their 3-point shooter. Once again, the TJ Freshman Girls team showed their dominating defense and controlling offense!

Freshman Girls Basketball — Difficult loss at home

The TJ Freshman Girls lost a tough battle in their home game on December 11th against the Stone Bridge Bulldogs. After a challenging start, which ended with TJ behind 2-7, the Colonials rallied, turned the game in their favor, and were up 9-8 by the end of the half. TJ kept the lead and at the end of the third quarter, the Colonials were still one point ahead, 11-10. Some bad luck and hard pressing by the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter caused some problems for the Colonials; TJ lost this hard-fought battle, 15-25.

Freshman Girls Basketball — Win First Game!

A dominating TJ freshman girls' basketball team beat Wakefield High School in their first game on December 4, 2007. All team members contributed with baskets, free-throws, rebounds, steals, and blocked-shots. TJ led all four quarters in this away game and finished with a decisive 11 (Wakefield) – 24 (TJ) win.

Freshman Girls Basketball — Off to a Great Start

The TJ freshman girls' basketball team played Hayfield Secondary School in their first scrimmage on November 27, 2007. The game consisted of four eight-minute quarters, scored separately. The TJ Freshman controlled the entire game with rebounds, break-aways, steals, and all-around tough defense and dominating offense. The final scores were: 0 (Hayfield)-6 (TJ); 4-12; 2-2; and 2-10, comprising an overall 8-30 win for TJ!
