Team Results
2007-08 Swimming All Americans
The National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association has announced its 2007-2008 All American swimming team, which includes four TJHSST students. The team of Wade Gong, Jonathan Christensen, Ben Tuben, and Matt Callahan earned All American status in the 200 yard medley relay. Jonathan Christensen also earned individual All American honors in the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard breaststroke, and Ben Tuben earned All American honors in the 100 yard butterfly.
TJ Swimmers and Divers Score Well At 2008 Virginia AAA State Championship
A number of fast swims led the TJ boys to a fourth place finish at the 2008 Virginia AAA State Championship meet.
Senior captain Jonathan Christensen won the 200 yard individual medley with an new TJ record and automatic All American time of 1:53.01. Christensen also placed second in the 100 yard breaststroke after setting a new State and TJ record in the preliminaries with an automatic All American time of 57.34. Senior captain Ben Tuben placed fourth in the 100 yard butterfly after setting a new State and TJ record in the preliminaries with an automatic All American time of 49.77, and Wade Gong placed fifth in the 100 yard backstroke with an All American consideration time. The 200 yard medley relay team of Gong, Christensen, Tuben, and Matt Callahan took second with an automatic All American time, and Andrew Hong, Callahan, Tuben, and Christensen placed fourth in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a new TJ record and All American consideration time of 3:14.18. Also contributing points were Ben Tuben in the backstroke, and the team of Joey Bouchard, Hong, Gong, and Callahan in the 200 yard freestyle relay.
For the girls, senior captain Kelly Dietz captured tenth place in diving.
TJ Swimmers/Divers Perform Well At Northern Region Meet
The TJ boys used a number of high finishes to finish in fourth place overall at the Northern Region Swimming and Diving meet. Junior Wade Gong, senior captain Jonathan Christensen, senior captain Ben Tuben, and sophomore Matt Callahan started the meet off with a victory in the medley relay. Their time of 1:35.11 was also a TJ record, a Region record, and an automatic All American time. Christensen later added victories in the individual medley, with a new TJ record and automatic All American time of 1:53.18, and in the breaststroke, with a automatic All American time of 57.89. Tuben placed third in the butterfly with a new TJ record of 51.89, and Gong took third in the backstroke with an All American consideration time. Callahan and Tuben also placed in the top eight in the backstroke. Andrew Hong joined Callahan, Tuben, and Christensen swimming to a fifth place finish in the 400 yard freestyle relay.
For the girls, senior captain Kelly Dietz captured eighth place in diving.
TJ Has Strong Performances At Liberty District Meet
The Thomas Jefferson Swim & Dive team had some strong performances at the Liberty District Championship meet.
For the boys, Wade Gong, Jonathan Christensen, Ben Tuben, and Matt Callahan started the meet with a victory and new Liberty District record in the medley relay. Christensen won the individual medley and the breaststroke, the former with a new team and Liberty District record, while Gong won the backstroke and Tuben took second in the butterfly. Alex Dona qualified for the Northern Region meet in the 200 and 500 freestyles, as did Andrew Hong in the individual medley and 100 freestyle, Matt Callahan in the 100 freestyle and backstroke, Jed Metge in the 500 freestyle, and Tuben in the backstroke. The 200 freestyle relay of Joey Bouchard, Dona, Christian Matthews, and Hong, and the 400 freestyle relay of Hong, Callahan, Tuben, and Christensen, also placed and qualified for the Northern Region meet.
For the girls, Kelly Dietz placed eighth in diving with a State Championship qualifying score, and Lauren Laffosse took fifth in the 500, qualifying them for the Region meet. The 200 freestyle relay of Jae Sim, Grace Wang, Megan Sagurton, and Laffosse also qualified for the Region meet.
TJ Swim & Dive Seniors Complete Dual Meet Season
TJ swimmers and divers split their meets against Woodson, with the girls falling 107-208 and the boys winning 163-152. The boys completed their dual meets with a record of 5-2, while the girls were 3-4.
For the girls, Ronit Malka placed second in the 200 and 500 freestyles. Senior Catherine Kim took second in the backstroke, as did Lauren Laffosse in the individual medley. Top three finishes were claimed by Christina Wallin in diving, Clarice Lee in the butterfly, and Erica Curles in the backstroke.
For the boys, senior Ben Tuben won the butterfly and backstroke, senior Jon Christensen won the individual medley and 100 freestyle, and Wade Gong won the 200 freestyle. Tuben joined Andrew Hong, Zach Batts, and Matt Callahan to win the medley relay, while Tuben, Callahan, Gong, and Christensen won the 200 freestyle relay with a time that qualifies them for the state meet in February.
TJ Swim & Dive Seniors Lead TJ To Victories Over Marshall
TJ swimmers and divers won their meets against Marshall, with the girls winning 210-101 and the boys winning 238-65. The boys took first and second in all nine individual events and all three relays, while the girls won all three relays and six of nine individual events.
Seniors Hannah Catlow had wins in the 50 freestyle and the backstroke, Catherine Kim won the 100 freestyle, Kelly Dietz took second in diving, Christine Beres scored seconds in both the 100 freestyle and the backstroke, and Michele Oresky and Amy McCormack contributed points in the backstroke and breaststroke. Also, Brianna Kim and Kelly Rogers went 1-2 in the 200 freestyle, Erica Curles won the individual medley, Lauren Laffosse and Colleen Knight went 1-2 in the butterfly, and Ronit Malka took second in the 500 freestyle, as did Sarah Catlow in the breaststroke. Anna Lan, Sarah Catlow, Rebecca Fielding, and Jae Sim combined to win the medley relay; Laffosse, Kim, Beres, and Sim won the 200 freestyle relay; and Sim, Laffosse, Lan, and Kim won the 400 freestyle relay.
For the boys, seniors Ben Tuben won the individual medley, Jon Christensen won the 50 freestyle and the backstroke, Thomas Haugh took second in diving, Tim Xu, Matt Badgett, and Kyle Zora went 1-2-3 in the 500 freestyle, and Xu picked up a second in the backstroke. Also, Daniel Markwalter won the diving event, Peter Ballen and Jed Metge went 1-2 in the 200 freestyle, Sam Surette took second in the individual medley, Wade Gong and Christian Matthews went 1-2 in the butterfly, Hugh Smith and Will Pitler went 1-2 in the 100 freestyle, Smith also taking second in the 50 freestyle, and Mike Kim and Chris Au went 1-2 in the breaststroke. Matt Callahan was on three winning relays, joining Andrew Hong, Zach Batts, and Tuben on the medley relay; Joey Bouchard, Gong, and Christensen on the 200 freestyle relay; and Tuben, Gong, and Christensen on the 400 freestyle relay.
TJ Swim & Dive Teams Defeat South Lakes
In a dual meet against South Lakes, the TJ girls used their depth to win 175-137, while the TJ boys won all three relays and all but one individual event to win 204-111.
For the girls, Catherine Kim led the way with a victory in the 500 freestyle and a second in the 200 freestyle, which was won by teammate Clarice Lee. Other top three finishers were Lauren Laffosse and Grace Wang in the individual medley, Jae Sim and Megan Sagurton in the 50 freestyle, Rebecca Fielding in the butterfly, Sim in the 100 freestyle, Ronit Malka in the 500 freestyle, Anna Lan in the backstroke, and Sarah Catlow in the breaststroke. The girls 200 freestyle relay of Laffosse, Catlow, Sagurton, and Sim also won.
Individual event winners for the boys were Jon Christensen in the 200 freestyle and butterfly, Wade Gong in the individual medley and backstroke, Matt Callahan in the 50 freestyle, Ben Tuben in the 100 freestyle, and Alex Dona in the 500 freestyle. Callahan, Gong, Tuben, and Christensen teamed to win the 400 freestyle relay. Callahan, Tuben, and Christensen were joined by Andrew Hong to win the 200 freestyle relay, and Zach Batts and Mike Kim joined Gong and Dona to win the medley relay.
Divers Kelly Dietz and Christina Wallin had a 1-2 finish, and Megan Jang successfully completed six dives in her first ever diving competition to earn fourth place. Daniel Markwalter, Thomas Haugh, and John Walsh finished 1-3-4 to complete another win for both dive squads.
Despite Strong Performances, TJ Swim & Dive Teams Fall To Madison
In a dual meet against Madison, the TJ girls lost to the strong Madison girls team 86-229, while the TJ boys made it close but lost 141.5-172.5.
For the girls, the divers scored well again, with senior Kelly Dietz taking a first and Christina Wallin finishing third, with a personal best score. Other top finishers were senior Catherine Kim in the 200 freestyle, Lauren Laffosse in the 50 freestyle and breaststroke, Jae Sim in the 100 freestyle and backstroke, Rebecca Fielding in the butterfly, and Anna Lan in the 100 freestyle.
Individual event winners for the boys were sophomore Matt Callahan in the 100 freestyle and breaststroke, junior Wade Gong in the backstroke, and junior Andrew Hong in the individual medley. Gong and Callahan teamed with sophomores Alex Dona and Joey Bouchard to win the medley relay.
TJ Swim & Dive Teams Split With McLean
In a dual meet against McLean, the TJ girls lost to the strong McLean girls team 120-194, while the TJ boys won all three relays and all but two individual events to win 194-115.
For the girls, sophomore Lauren Laffosse won the individual medley and was second in the butterfly. Other top three finishers were senior Catherine Kim in the 200 freestyle and backstroke, Megan Sagurton in the 50 freestyle, Rebecca Fielding in the butterfly, Erica Curles in the 500 freestyle, and Sarah Catlow in the breaststroke.
Individual event winners for the boys were senior Jon Christensen in the 500 freestyle and breaststroke, junior Wade Gong in the individual medley and backstroke, sophomore Matt Callahan in the 50 and 100 freestyle, and sophomore Alex Dona in the butterfly. Gong and Christensen were joined by senior Tim Xu and Joey Bouchard to win the medley relay; Callahan, Bouchard, Andrew Hong, and Steven Howard won the 200 freestyle relay; and Gong, Dona, Christensen, and Jed Metge won the 400 freestyle relay.
The depth of the boys and girls dive teams resulted in them outscoring McLean in both diving events. Daniel Markwalter turned in a strong second place performance followed closely by senior Thomas Haugh and John Walsh. Senior captain Kelly Dietz and Christina Wallin captured second and third respectively.
TJ Swim & Dive Teams Defeat Stone Bridge
In a dual meet against Stone Bridge, the TJ girls used their depth to overcome the strong Stone Bridge girls team 158-151, while the TJ boys won all three relays and all but two individual events to win 235-73.
For the girls, sophomore Lauren Laffosse won the individual medley and was second in the butterfly. Other top three finishers were Clarice Lee and senior Christine Beres in the 200 freestyle, Brianna Kim in the individual medley, Jae Sim in the 50 and 100 freestyles, Rebecca Fielding in the butterfly, Anna Lan in the 100 freestyle, senior Catherine Kim in the 500 freestyle, and Joowon Choi in the breaststroke.
Individual event winners for the boys were senior Ben Tuben in the 200 freestyle and butterfly, Andrew Hong in the 100 freestyle and backstroke, Matt Callahan in the 50 freestyle, and Roman Enson in the breaststroke. Callahan was joined by Will Pitler, senior Tim Xu, and Steven Howard to win the medley relay, Callahan, Tuben, Hong, and Joey Bouchard won the 200 freestyle relay, and Hong, Tuben, Peter Ballen, and Jed Metge won the 400 freestyle relay.
TJ Swim & Dive Team Begins Season
The TJ Swim & Dive Team began its 2007-2008 season with a dual meet against Liberty District powerhouse Langley. The boy's team lost 148-157; and the girls lost 114-201.
For the girls, senior Kelly Dietz won the diving event with a score that also qualified her for the Northern Region meet at the end of the season. Other top three finishers were Catherine Kim in the 200 freestyle, Lauren Laffosse in the individual medley and the butterfly, Christina Wallin in diving, and Sarah Catlow and Grace Wang in the breaststroke.
The boys were led by returning All American seniors Jonathan Christensen and Ben Tuben and junior Wade Gong. The trio teamed with Joey Bouchard to win the medley relay, and Gong, Christensen, Bouchard, and Andrew Hong won the 200 freestyle relay. Christensen won the individual medley with an All American consideration time of 1:54.66, breaking his team record from last year by a hundredth of a second. He also won the breaststroke. Gong won the 100 freestyle and backstroke, while Tuben won the butterfly and took second in the 200 freestyle. Senior Thomas Haugh won the diving event. Other top three finishers were Hong in the individual medley, Matt Callahan in to 50 freestyle and backstroke, Alex Dona in the butterfly and 500 freestyle, and Jed Metge in the 500 freestyle.
