TJ JV Softball vs. Marshall

Marshall quickly got off to an early lead, but TJ JV Softball hung in there and kept working and brought the score to within 4 runs. The infield worked hard and adjusted to three of the regular players missing. In the outfield, Lauren Kim caught two fly balls for two outs! This game was fun for the team and fun for the fans, because of the team's can-do, never-give-up attitude.

TJ JV Softball vs. South Lakes

Both teams had improved considerably since their first matchup, but TJ got ahead early and stayed there. There were many great defensive plays including great catches in the outfield. At bat, there were several doubles, many other hits, and great base running. Special acknowledgment for Allie Brouckman at shortstop for her double play and involvement in many outs and for Jenni Mercado for awesome plays at second base! Keep it up TJ!

TJ JV Softball vs. Madison

The team had some good moments against Madison with two double plays and several great at bats. Em Maier not only caught a great game, but had a great hit to center field that brought in a run! Way to go TJ!

TJ JV Softball vs. McLean

A terrific win at home for TJ who stayed strong throughout the game! The outfield worked to efficiently bring the ball in and the infield turned a few double plays. Kaitlin Kressin and Jen Park made multiple great plays at first and third respectively! Way to go TJ!

TJ JV Softball vs. Stone Bridge

The score of this game was 2-4 going into the 5th inning. Once again, the JV softball team is showing just how much it is improving! Bethany Connor pitched a great 6 innings. Special acknowledgement for Jean He's double to center field that brought in runs and Aria Sharma's hit that advanced runners and for her backup in multiple left-field plays.

TJ JV Softball vs. Langley

Once again, the JV softball team played tough through an entire game! The team rallied in the last innings to make the game interesting with a final score of 8-14. The defense was strong, especially in the middle innings. The team is improving with every game. Special acknowledgement for Darcey Pancoast's double to left field and Sarah McManis's great night pitching and hitting.

TJ JV Softball vs. Marshall

Our TJ girls were competitive throughout against tough Marshall pitching. Some great tag outs were a result of hustle in the outfield and on-target throws to the cutoff. Another good effort by the entire team!

TJ JV Softball vs. South Lakes

A win for TJ! Everything came together for our team with outstanding execution in the field and consistently strong batting. Great job TJ!

TJ JV Softball Early Season Summary

The TJ JV softball team came together nicely during the two pre-season scrimmages, going 1-1. We opened our season with strong fielding against and experienced Langley team. It was a good start for our first regular season game. The TJ team then played enthusiastically against a strong Stone Bridge team. Our execution in the field continued to improve. Against both Madison and McLean, the TJ girls played hard through the final out. In both games, offense showed signs of strength. Special acknowledgement for Vivian Lu's great catch in right field and making the throw for the double play at first.

No April Fool — April 1, 2008

TJ Varsity Softball upset Stone Bridge on Tuesday, April 1, outscoring the Bull Dogs by 4-2. The Lady Colonials challenged from the first at-bat as junior Toby Loewenstein fended off 7 pitches to earn a walk. Senior Kate Cooper immediately followed with a line drive to left field. Both runners then advanced on an error by the Bull Dogs. Freshman Barbara Lantz brought Toby home on a ground ball down the first base line, and Cooper scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the first, the lead off batter for Stone Bridge took advantage of a dropped third strike to take first base. Sophomore pitcher Meghan Mutchler then dashed the hopes of the Bull Dogs striking out the next batter, catching a popup in the pitcher's circle, and tagging the lead-off batter in a pickle play. A heads-up throw down by catcher Amy Plunk to third baseman Lowenstein caught the Stone Bridge runner half way between second and third base. Shortstop Hope Smith prevented the runner from returning to second, and Mutchler executed the tag as the runner tried to slide into third.

The Lady Colonials scored two more runs in the third inning. Mutchler singled, Lantz reached on error, and Plunk brought them both home with a single to center field. Lantz also tripled in the 5th inning but was unable to score in that inning. Cooper and sophomore Sydney Schrider too were stranded after delivering well hit singles to the green.

The game victory was achieved by solid teamwork. Mutchler dominated on the mound delivering a combination of punch-out strikes, fly balls, and in-field grounders. The in-field made quick work of all grounders and bunt attempts. Schrider, in particular, showed mastery of her position as she covered first base for several bunt attempt outs. Lantz at center field and sophomore Emily Schultz both made outstanding catches late in the game. Seniors Plunk and Cooper made breath-taking catches of foul balls that brought the stands to their feet.

The TJ crowd stayed on their feet to cheer as their team brought home the victory. Coach Brian Fleury kept the team pumped and focused. His final comment: "That was fun." No April Fool!
