Varsity Golf Team Synopsis
The 2007 Thomas Jefferson High School Varsity Golf Team was up for a challenge this year after losing four seniors from the previous season. The team was mostly comprised of younger classmen, with Robert MacGregor and Alex Radcliffe leading the team as the only seniors. The Colonials also picked up a new coach, George Malenich, who immediately made his impact on the team, organizing daily practices to improve each player's individual skills.
Their hard work paid off after the first season tournament, as MacGregor and Stefan Kowalski shot a 79 and 81 respectively. MacGregor explained, "I really feel our coach did a great job preparing the team for each match by leading us in quality practice sessions, which were geared towards improving our swing and course strategy."
The season was tough, as the team finished with an overall record of 4-3. Robert MacGregor, Stefan Kowalski, and Alex Radcliffe performed well all year for the Colonials. Younger players, such as Ben Choi and Matt Callahan, improved their games and contributed to many of the team's successes.
The district tournament was disappointing for the TJ golf team, which finished in the bottom half of the teams. However, Robert MacGregor shot rounds of 79 and 81 to qualify for the Northern Virginia regional tournament. Two solid rounds during the regional tournament put MacGregor in the middle of the pack.
To mark his achievements in golf and soccer, MacGregor was awarded the Fairfax County Public School Athlete of the Week award. In addition, MacGregor was also selected as ABC News Channel 7's Athlete of the Week. He was interviewed and videotaped for a short sports story that aired a week later.
