Alumni Update

Jarel Cohen Honored by
the Washington Redskins and Allstate

Jarel Cohen, a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, was recognized at Redskins Park this week as the Scholastic Star of the Week. A stand-out on and off the field, Jarel carries a 4.0 average and is a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist. As the middle linebacker for the Colonials, he was Thomas Jefferson's Defensive MVP, and 2nd leading tackler in the State of Virginia with 115 tackles (41 solo and 74 assisted), 3 sacks, and 9 forced fumbles this season.

In addition to academics and football, Jarel throws the shot for TJ, plays baseball, tutors Biology and Calculus, and is a professional baseball umpire for Babe Ruth, high school, and adult league games. Jarel is planning to study biomedical engineering and play football at Harvard, Carnegie Mellon or Washington University in St. Louis next fall.

The Washington Redskins, in partnership with Allstate, recognizes local student athletes (football players) for their accomplishments on and off the football field through the Scholastic Star of the Week program. Each week, a different athlete is honored and awarded a plaque for his accomplishments. This feature is shown during the Redskins Players Club (which airs Sat at noon on WUSA – Channel 9).

All District Honors

Six football players were chosen for All-District Honors:

2007 – 2008 Colonial Varsity Football Summary

TJ's Varsity Football squad left it all on the field this season as they fought to find ways to win week in and week out in 2007. The resulting 1 – 9 record in no way reflects the hard work and dedication of each and every one of them as they represented themselves and their school with honor, pride, and courage. The bonds of this team were strong and their level of commitment and enthusiasm never wavered as they fought for each other and for victory through the very last whistle of the very last game.

Several underclassmen stepped-up this season, and departing Colonial Seniors worked continuously in the development of the team's younger players, leaving a legacy of selflessness and perseverance that will not soon be forgotten. They have raised the bar high for those that will follow. Thanks to the entire coaching staff for their time and effort and especially to the Seniors for their hard work, four years of unforgettable memories and for their tireless dedication to this team.

District honors went to Seniors Sean Carmichael (Offense and Defense Honorable Mention), Jarel Cohen (Defense Honorable Mention), Patrick Coleman (Offense Honorable Mention), and Andrew Lutes (Offense and Defense Honorable Mention), and Juniors Evan Burch (2nd Team Punter and Receiver), and Mike Howard (1st Team Defensive Back).

TJ vs. South Lakes 11/2/07

The Colonials dig in and fight hard for their seniors to wrap up the 2007 season. Mike Howard grabs another interception while Josh Yoon leads with 11 tackles on the night. Evan Burch lights it up on a 73 yd kickoff return for a TD and Jack Sullivan follows a 16 yd Sean Carmichael reception with a 4 yd run into the Seahawk's endzone. South Lakes won 24 to 14.

TJ vs. Stone Bridge 10/26/07

Despite a well organized opening drive and several defensive stands TJ is unable to answer or stop a relentless Stone Bridge offense. On defense Will Toothman grabs another fumble, Sean Carmichael leads in tackles and he and Jarel Cohen share the sole QB sack of the evening. Stone Bridge won 49 to 0.

TJ vs. McLean 10/19/07

Two interceptions and 2 fumbles lost by the Colonials prove too much to overcome in the 7-28 loss to McLean. TJ's solo score comes on a 2 yard run by QB Ben Daly. DT Conner Michelli logs a QB sack and LB Jarel Cohen shines on defense with 3 solo and 12 assisted tackles.

TJ vs. Marshall 10/12/07

In spite of 132 yards in the air on the combined efforts of QBs Jack Sullivan and Ben Daly as well as 2 QB sacks on the night by Jarel Cohen and Sean Carmichael, The Colonials were unable to get in the endzone in their game against the Statesmen. Three Colonial interceptions and two lost fumbles prove to be the deciding factor in the 0-21 loss to Marshall.

TJ vs. Wakefield 10/05/07

The Colonials fired on all cylinders in their victory against the Warriors, defeating Wakefield behind an aggressive defense, a determined offensive line, strong running and passing, and hard fought yards after the catch. Colonial momentum built early after a 16 yard touchdown pass from QB Jack Sullivan to #80 Sean Carmichael, a fumble recovery by #30 Alex Shmorhun and an interception by #21 Mike Howard in the first half. The evening was highlighted by a late interception and 16 yard return for a touchdown by #80 Sean Carmichael to put the Colonials in the lead, and a final drive-ending interception to effectively end the game by #2 Mike Malinowski. TJ – 21; Wakefield – 16.

Here's a nother descripton of this game:

TJ earns its first victory of the season defeating Wakefield 24 – 16. TJ's initial drive after the kickoff stalls at the 4-yard line with a turnover. On its second play from scrimmage, Wakefield scores first with a 95-yard touchdown run. Then on their next possession TJ scores a touchdown and proceeds to take control of the game.

TJ QB Jack Sullivan generates 182 total yards going 7 for 11 for 87 yards passing, and runs 13 times to lead the team in rushing with 95 yards. RB Josh Yoon gains 66 yards on 11 carries, and scores a touchdown. TE Sean Carmichael makes two receptions for 32 yards and two touchdowns. Sean Carmichael also stars on defense with 3 tackles, 8 assists, and an interception.

TJ vs. Madison 9/28/07

Thomas Jefferson came out strong for their Homecoming game holding their opponent to 7 points in the first quarter, but fell prey to a strong James Madison offense that amassed 27 points in the second quarter. The determined Colonials also put up 14 hard earned points of their own on rushes by QB Jack Sullivan and #32 Jarel Cohen behind a strong-blocking Colonial offensive line. TJ – 14; JM – 48.

TJ vs. Woodson 9/20/07

The Colonials gave their all in an uphill battle against a high-powered Woodson offensive unit in week four. The creative bright spot of the night was a late second quarter fake field-goal pass from #3 Will Riedel to #80 Sean Carmichael for the Colonials solo touchdown of the evening. TJ – 6; Woodson – 56.

TJ vs. Mount Vernon 9/14/07

The Colonials offense was unable to capitalize on several key turnovers taken during game three against Mount Vernon. In spite of answering late on a 5 yard touchdown run by #44 Richard Hooper and a season-high eighteen tackles by #32 Jarel Cohen in the game, Mount Vernon was able to capitalize on two interceptions deep in TJ territory and put up 43 total points against the Colonials. TJ – 7; MV – 43.

TJ vs. Langley 9/07/07

TJ's Colonials found the going extremely tough against a strong Langley team in week two. Several key injuries and offensive turnovers eliminated TJ's ability to answer the 28 points amassed by their opponent. TJ – 0; Langley – 28.

TJ vs. Falls Church 8/30/07

The Colonials fought hard for victory in their season opener against and at Falls Church, but unfortunately a rushing touchdown from QB Ben Daly and seven yard strike to #3 Will Riedel were not enough to overcome an effective first half Falls Church passing attack. TJ – 16; Falls Church – 34.
