Team Results
Boys' Varsity Basketball
The TJ boys wrapped up a successful regular season against Stone Bridge on senior night with a resounding 48-25 victory. Senior Vanya Bilyeu said farewell in fashion with 12 points, 5 steals, and 2 assists. Fellow seniors Nate Hough 5, Will Riedel 5, Ryan Clubb 2, and Peter Westman 1, participated in the scoring frenzy as most of the seniors put points on the board. Senior guard Kareem El-Gohary provided the court leadership to keep the Colonials focused for 4 quarters.
The team ended the season with a 9-12 record. This is the most wins from a varsity basketball team dating back over 10 years, if not since the school's inception. The team looks forward to the opening round of the District playoffs against Madison.
Congratulations to Ryan Clubb on being selected to the All Liberty District Defensive team! He also finished the regular season as the assist leader in the Northern Region per Digital Sports.
Congratulations to Spencer DeMars for being selected to the Second Team All Liberty District team! He also finished the season ranked third in rebounding in the Northern Region per Digital Sports.
Freshmen Boys end season with a win!
The Freshmen Boys basketball team completed a very good season by defeating Stone Bridge, 46-42 on Friday, 15 Feb at TJ. Despite giving up a lot of size to Stone Bridge, the Colonials played a very good game defensively in earning the victory. TJ had the lead throughout most of the game, but a late run by Stone Bridge and missed free throws in the fourth quarter made the game very close at the end. The freshman boys ended up with a 7-9 record, and were 7-7 in the Liberty district. Both non-district losses were by less than 7 points. Congratulations to the coaches and players on a very good season!
Boys Varsity Basketball — February Update
The boys' varsity team is currently 6-9 on the season. After a close loss to McLean, where the game was tied in the final minute, the team beat Marshall handily 67-49. Ryan Clubb had a northern region season high 10 assists and Spencer DeMars had a double-double, 20 points and 12 rebounds. Kareem El-Gohary added 14 points. Clubb and Demars are currently both third in the Northern Region in assists and rebounding, respectively.
District losses against, Langley, Woodson, Madison, and South Lakes followed the Marshall game. With the exception of Langley, all the games were extremely close for most of the game. The Colonials had the ball and a chance to take the lead in the final minute against both Woodson and South Lakes. In addition to the players listed above, Vanya Bilyeu and Will Riedel continue to hit three pointers, while Nate Hough and Mike Ross provide strong post play and inside scoring.
A special thanks to the Monticello Maniacs this year for their enthusiastic support! Please come out and help the maniacs support the team for the remainder of the season.
Freshmen Boys Upset Woodson, 49-38
The Freshmen Boys basketball team played their best game of the season and upset Woodson, 49-38, Thursday, 2/7/08, at Woodson. The Colonials played outstanding defense throughout the game and dominated the second half to earn the victory. After being down by 5 at halftime, TJ outscored Woodson 31-15 in the second half. In addition to the strong defense, the Colonials shot over 70% from the field in the second half and were 9 for 13 from the free throw line in the 4th quarter. The outstanding shooting was aided by several nice assists that led to easy layups. The win was the third in the last four games for the Freshman Boys, who improved to 6-8 on the season and 6-6 in the district. Woodson dropped to 10-4 (9-3 in district) and the loss snapped their five game winning streak.
Freshmen Boys Lose to Langley
The Freshmen Boys basketball team lost to Langley on 4 Feb by a score of 39-26. Despite the loss, the team showed a marked improvement over a defeat at home to Langley by 26 points earlier in the season. In the second quarter the Colonials fell behind by 11 points and could never close the gap, although they played the Saxons evenly throughout the second half. The Freshmen Boys fall to 5-8 on the season.
Freshmen Boys Win Two at Home
The Freshmen Boys basketball team raised their season record to 5-7 with wins at home on 29 Jan against McLean and on 1 Feb against Marshall. The Colonials avenged a last second loss to McLean earlier in the season by pulling away in the second half for a 36-28 victory. In the game against Marshall, the freshmen boys dominated the fourth quarter on their way to a 35-15 win. In both games, TJ played very aggressively on defense and controlled the temp of the games. The 15 points given up to Marshall was the best defensive effort of the season for the Colonials.
JV Hosts Woodson
TJ JV Boys basketball allows Woodson an 8-0 lead, then proceeds to outscore them by three points over the rest of a hard fought game. The loss puts our record in district at 1-5.
Freshmen Boys Drop Two at Home
The Freshmen Boys basketball team lost to Woodson at home on Tuesday, 51-42. This was the second straight at home for the Colonials, who lost to Langley last Friday, 49-23. In both games, TJ stayed very close in the first half, down by a point to Langley and three to Woodson. In each game, the third quarter was the turning point as TJ went cold and their opponents continued to put points on the scoreboard. The Colonials fought hard throughout the games and never gave up, but fell short in the end. With the losses, the Freshman boys dropped to 3-5 on the season.
JV Basketball Bests Marshall
JV Basketball won at Marshall 46-28 on Tuesday, January 8 and lost at home 55-36 on Friday, January 11. Tuesday's game featured a rare double-double when Aldo Avanzini scored 10 pts and had 10 rebounds off the bench. On Friday TJ was sorely missing two of its big men as Alan Allworth was ill and Aldo was injured.
Freshmen Boys Move to .500 with Big Win
The Freshmen Boys basketball team improved their record to 3-3 with an impressive 66-25 win at Marshall on Tuesday, 8 Jan 08. The Colonials jumped out to an early lead and steadily increased the lead throughout the game. In addition to setting a season high offensive scoring mark, even more extraordinary was the fact that all 13 players who dressed out for the game scored. Defensively, the Colonials held Marshall scoreless in the second period on their way to allowing the fewest points in a game this season. TJ demonstrated tremendous teamwork and hustle throughout the game.
TJ Freshman Lose to McLean on Last Second Shot
On Friday 01/04/2008, The TJ Freshmen Boys team came back from 8 points down in the fourth quarter to tie the game against McLean at 35 with 12 seconds to go. McLean then pushed the ball up the floor and scored on a driving lay up with under 3 seconds to go to win the game. TJ was in control most of the first half, taking a 20-15 lead into halftime. The Colonials came out cold in the 3rd quarter, scoring only two points and falling behind by four. After McLean stretched the lead to 8 points early in the 4th quarter, TJ rallied to tie the score. Despite the loss, the Freshmen Boys continued to play competitively against their opponents. With a 2-3 record, the three losses have been by a combined total of 9 points.
TJ JV Loses Heartbreaker to McLean
On Friday 01/04/2008, TJ JV makes a remarkable comeback against Mclean. Down 17 points late in the third quarter, TJ plays man-to-man with full court pressure and scores 14 unanswered points before McLean hits a field goal. The resurgent line-up consisted of Adil Dittmer, Paul Oh, Aldo Avanzini, Daniel Barnes, and Joe Reilly. With 1:11 to play the game is tied on a free throw by Daniel Barnes. After a series of turnovers by both teams, McLean hits a 3 pointer leaving 4 seconds to go. TJ's desperation three pointer at the buzzer misses to lose 43 - 46.
Varsity Team takes Third Place at Pohanka Classic
The boys Varsity finished 2007 by taking Third Place among eight teams in the Pohanka Chantilly Classic. The team started the tournament with a strong win over Hanover of Richmond 61-58. Spencer DeMars and Mike Ross lead the scoring with 15 points each. Ryan Clubb provided numerous assists to the big men while providing a stellar defensive effort in addition to 2 blocked shots. Vanya Bilyeu contributed 14 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds in an all around offensive effort. Co-Captain Will Riedel added 10 points of his own in addition to 6 steals.
The Colonials lost the chance to play for the championship by losing a hotly contested game against The Landon School. Ryan Clubb provided a strong defensive effort against Landon's leading scorer Webster, holding him to 6 points from the field. However, the Colonials could not stop Landon's big man inside. Perfect foul shooting down the stretch extended a 7-point lead late in the game. DeMars 13, Ross 10, Riedel 9, Bilyeu 5, and Clubb 4 provided the scoring.
In the third place game the Colonials pulled away from George Mason with a 63-37 victory. Nate Hough led the team with 14 points. Co-Captain Ryan Clubb provided an all around effort with 4 points, 1 steal, 7 assists, and 6 rebounds in addition to his defensive effort. Spencer DeMars and Mike Ross added 13 and 12 points respectively, and 6 rebounds each. Kareem El-Gohary had his best effort since coming back from a broken knuckle with 6 points and 4 assists.
The Colonials boast the following individual leaders in the whole Northern Region according to Digital Sports.com: Vanya Bilyeu moved up to 5th in three point shooting, Ryan Clubb has been in the top 5 assist leaders all year including a stint at the #1 spot, he currently sits at 4th, Spencer DeMars also has been in the rebounding leaders all year and currently sits at 4th.
The 3rd place performance was the Colonials best effort ever in the tournament. It was made possible by an "Expect to Win" attitude and a whole team effort. Any of the individuals mentioned above would trade their stats for a team win. The team is currently 5-4 for the season.
JV Basketball
TJ JV basketball is underway. Led by two Juniors, Joe Reilly and Travis Triggs, the team is 1-3 and ready for the heart of district play in January. The JV team defeated Washington & Lee 37-32 on December 14. Freshman Daniel Barnes and Sophomore Karl Sofinowski lead the team in scoring and rebounding. Alan Allworth, Jeff Pontell, and Travis Triggs round out the starting five.
TJ Boys Basketball Opens season 2-0
The Boys basketball team opened the 2007-2008 season with two victories. The opening line up included returning starters Vanya Bilyeu and Ryan Clubb, along with Senior Will Riedel and juniors Spencer DeMars and Mike Ross. The Colonials won the first game against a Wakefield team that last year went to the state finals with a record of 23-6. The final score was 60-57. Mike Ross and Spencer Demars scored 25 and 20 points respectively, while being continually fed in the post by assist leader Ryan Clubb. Both Clubb and Bilyeu hit key free throws down the stretch. Riedel sealed the game with a steal at half court that ended in a lay up.
Friday's win was over a tough Yorktown team, which earlier in the week defeated Annandale in overtime. Unlike the Wakefield game, the Colonials scored from the outside against the Patriots, in a close 41-39 victory. Vanya Bilyeu let loose an avalanche of three point shooting along with key baskets off the bench from Sean Ji and Wooyoung Moon. Trailing 39-38 with 10 seconds remaining, Ryan Clubb skied over a Yorktown player to grab a foul shot rebound that kept the Colonial hopes alive. After a timeout, Clubb in bounded to Riedel who hit Demars down low. Demars kicked the ball back to Riedel who hit the jumper (while being fouled) from the foul line with 2.9 seconds remaining. Riedel completed the "and1" for a 41-39 win.
