Junior Varsity Baseball Season Wrap-Up
Under the tutelage of Adam Nelson and assistant, Jim Smith the team matured, improved and played some competitive baseball this season. The team finished with a record of 4-9. This included two heartbreaking extra-inning losses against district foes — Langley and Marshall. The Colonials ended the season on a two game winning streak. It was an improvement of 2 wins over the previous JV campaign. The last game of the season against WT Woodson was rained out.
The coaches exercised patience and remained positive while insisting that the team play sound fundamental baseball. Collectively, the whole team improved and began to minimize mistakes that cost them early in the season. The second Langley game epitomized the gritty demeanor, determination and capabilities of a team willing to take on one of the better teams in the division. Though our team lost in nine innings, they earned the respect of an opponent that handled them easily earlier in the season.
Kyle Applegate, Kurtis Carlock, Robby Culhane, Steven Howard, Tom Irwin, Danny Lehnert, Jimmy O'Hara, Nick Perez and Ben Swanson comprised the sophomores on the team who provided some good baseball this campaign. The freshmen provided high energy, some timely hitting and speed on the base paths. The JV team next season can look to these freshmen for leadership — Michael Gurlitz, Peter Hansen, Ashneil Jain, Sean Long, Michael Monte, Will Pyrak, and Jason Schwartz.
Patrick Hill and Matt Callahan started on JV and were pulled up to Varsity during the season. The team manager was Daniel Kang.

TJ JV Baseball visits Nationals Park
The team concluded its season with an outing to Nationals Park. Although we did not win the karaoke contest, it was a great night to share time and enjoy baseball!
Varsity: Thomas Jefferson 1 vs Woodson 11
[5/13/08] In a Liberty District Tournament game, the TJ Colonials collected three hits, four walks, and left five runners on base. J.B. Vande Sand led off the game with a walk but TJ was unable to score in the inning. Mason Freedman started the game on the mound for the Colonials and in the bottom of the first inning served up one bad pitch, a three run home run by Max Weizenegger. In the second inning, Tom Woodruff hit a sharp double but was stranded at third base to end the Colonials threat. TJ scored their lone run in the top of the third when Tom Rudelius laid down a perfect bunt and quickly stole second base. Beau Pritchett then singled to earn an RBI on the night. Woodson collected two more runs in the third inning, four in the fourth and two in the fifth inning. Ryan Stumvoll came on in relief for TJ in the fourth inning. TJ lost by 10 run rule in 5 innings. Season Complete.
This was the last game for the four seniors on the team, Alex Radcliffe, J.B. Vande Sand, Beau Pritchett, and Tom Rudelius. Congratulations to Alex who earned second team all district honors and J.B. and Beau who earned all district honorable mention honors.
Varsity: Jefferson 2 vs Woodson 14
[5/10/08] A pre-game ceremony was held to honor the four departing TJ seniors on the team: Beau Pritchett, Alex Radcliffe, Tom Ruedlius, and J. B. Vande Sand. Junior Mason Freedman started on the mound and held the explosive Woodson Cavaliers to a lone run in the top of the first inning. The Thomas Jefferson Colonials responded in the bottom of the first when the first two hitters, J.B. Vande Sand and Tom Ruedlius drew walks off of the Cavaliers starting pitcher, John McGillicuddy. Alex Radcliffe then singled home J.B. to notch an RBI. The Cavaliers scored another run in the top of the second. The Colonials threatened in the bottom of the second when Patrick Still walked and J. B. Vande Sand singled which turned out to be the only other hit by the Colonials on the night. Four Cavalier pitchers, however, issued a total of nine walks to the Colonials on the night. Coach Gardziel relieved Mason Freedman at the start of the third inning to save Mason's arm for the upcoming Liberty District Tournament. The Cavaliers immediately took advantage of the change on the mound by unloading for six runs in the third inning and again in the fourth inning. Jefferson lost by 10 run rule in 5 innings.
The Colonials will face the Cavaliers for the third time this season on the Cavaliers home field on Wednesday, May 14th, in the first district tournament game for both teams.
Varsity: Jefferson 0 vs. Marshall 10
[5/6/08] J. B. Vande Sand led off the game with a double over the head of the left fielder and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Tom Rudelius. However, a pop-up to the third basemen and a strikeout ended the Colonial threat. Chris Kilgore started on the mound for the Colonials and gave up only one hit through the first two innings. Chris was effectively mixing up his pitches and kept the Statesmen's hitters off balance. But after hitting the first batter in the bottom of the third inning, the next two hitters reached base on two consecutive infield errors. The Marshall hitters started hitting the ball sharply after those miscues and ended the inning on top by 6-0. They added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with Patrick Still on the mound. The Colonials managed five hits on the night. Besides J. B.'s first inning double, Alex Radcliffe also doubled and Jon Wildes, Jeff Seibach, and Tom Rudelius each had singles. TJ lost by 10 run rule in 5 innings.
Varsity: Jefferson 1 vs. South Lakes 8
[5/2/08] The Thomas Jefferson Colonials had a chance to take a lead in the bottom of the first inning when leadoff hitter J. B. Vande Sand walked. With two outs, Beau Pritchett laced a double to notch the Colonials only RBI on the night. Tom Rudelius and J. B. had the only other two hits for the Colonials during the game, both singles. Alex Radcliffe and Tom Woodruff also reached first base by drawing walks and J. B. went three for three on the bases thanks to an error by the second basemen during the third inning. Mason Freedman had a stellar play defensively at third base by back handing a hard shot deep behind the base and gunning down the South Lakes runner at first base. South Lakes scored two runs in the second, four in the fourth, and two in the seventh to tally their eight runs.

Varsity: Jefferson 0 vs Madison 9
[4/30/08] Chris Kilgore retired the side in the top of the first inning leaving the door open for the Thomas Jefferson Colonials to take a lead in the bottom of the first. J.B. Vande Sand led off with a single to left field and Tom Rudelius worked a walk from the Warhawks starting pitcher, Ted Williams. A wild pitch later, the Colonials had runners primed to score on second base and third base with no outs. Two grounders back to the mound and an inning ending strikeout ended the Colonial threat. The Warhawks responded by scoring two runs in the second, three runs in the third, and four runs in the fourth. Their streak — for five runs in the fifth inning —was denied by the Colonial's relief pitcher, freshman Patrick Still, whose wicked curve ball was primarily responsible for retiring the Warhawks side in the top of the fifth inning. Patrick went on to pitch two more hitless and scoreless innings to complete the game on the mound for the Colonials. Beau Pritchett and Alex Radcliffe also had hits for Thomas Jefferson in the game.
JV Baseball Results
4/30/08: Jefferson 0 vs Madison 17 in 5 innings.
Varsity: Jefferson 0 vs McLean 6
[4/25/08] The Colonials faced second place McLean and their ace Sean Fitzgerald at McLean. In the top of the fifth inning the Colonials were down 2-0 when TJ's pitcher, Mason Freedman, started a two out rally with a walk. A subsequent two base error left runners on second and third. Unfortunately, the Colonials were unable to break through against Fitzgerald who pitched a complete game one hitter against a depleted Colonial batting order. The Colonials were missing their leadoff hitter, JB Vande Sand, number three hitter Allan Allworth as well as Jon Wildes. Beau Pritchett had the Colonials only hit, a line drive single to right field. Mason turned in a solid outing, surrendering three runs on six hits over five innings. Three of the hits were weak infield grounders. He was supported well by a strong defense which included catcher Matt Callahan throwing out two base-runners, a spectacular catch in centerfield by Alex Radcliff, and five putouts at shortstop by Tom Woodruff.

4/25/08: Jefferson 0 vs McLean 17 in 7 innings.
Varsity: Stone Bridge 14 — Thomas Jefferson 3
[04/23/08] The Stone Bridge bulldogs opened up an 8-0 lead after 2½ innings before the Colonials notched a run in the bottom of the third. J.B. Vande Sand reached second on a throwing error by the second baseman and was driven in by the Colonials first hit of the evening, a sharp single by Tom Rudelius. The Colonials added two more in the bottom of the 6th inning. Alex Radcliffe led off the inning with a double which was followed by back-to-back singles by Jeff Siebach and Tom Woodruff. Ryan Stumvoll also added a single to go along with a double an inning earlier.
TJ lost by 10 run rule in 6 innings.
JV Baseball Results
4/23/08: Jefferson 0 vs. Stone Bridge 12. Lost by 10 run rule in 5 innings.
Varsity: Langley 5 — Thomas Jefferson 2
[4/18/08] The Colonials led this one 2-1 after 4 ½ innings on ace Mason Freedman's best district outing of the year. Alex Radcliffe started the top of the fourth inning with a single. Jeff Siebach moved Alex to second. Tom Woodruff then hit a key single to score Alex who had advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Mason and Jon Wildes also singled in the inning. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Langley struck back. With two runners on base, their clean-up hitter, Eddie Gonzalez, came to the plate. Eddie hit a "no question" home run over the center field fence to put Langley ahead for good. Colonials freshman Patrick Still, who was playing in his first varsity game, came on in relief and recorded four straight outs to end the game. Defensively, Jeff Siebach, continued his excellent play at first base by handling several hot shots and swiping two runners out at first base on throws that pulled him off the base.
JV Baseball Results
4/18/08: Jefferson 6 vs. Langley 7 in 9 innings.
Varsity: Woodson 15 — Thomas Jefferson 5
[4/16/08] This game started out like the last several for the Colonials. The Woodson Cavaliers scored 9 unanswered runs in the first two innings to put the Colonials into another deep hole. Unlike the earlier contests, however, only one infield Colonial error contributed to the deficit. But a glimmer of hope for the game, and maybe the rest of the season as this young team continues to mature, was displayed in the top of the third inning. Beau Pritchett singled but was cut down attempting to get to second on a Cavalier miscue. J. B. Vande Sand and Tom Rudelius then worked the Cavalier's pitcher for walks. After a second out, Jeff Siebach singled to load the bases but a fly ball to center field ended the Colonials threat. But the inning set the stage for the Colonials fourth and fifth inning. They scored a lone run in the fourth when J. B. Vande Sand singled to drive in Jonathan Wildes from second base. J. B., who was moved to the leadoff batting position by Coach Gardziel for the first time this season, added two more RBIs in the fifth with another single to go 2 for 3 on the night. Tom "Woodie" Woodruff and Mason Freedman also collected two hits a piece for the Colonials.
TJ lost by 10 run rule in 6 innings.
JV Baseball Results
4/16/08: Jefferson 2 vs. Woodson 7
Varsity: Marshall 18 — Thomas Jefferson 0
[4/14/08] The Colonials were unable to generate much offense against the Marshall Statesmen in last night's contest. For the third game in a row, the Colonials only managed one hit, a single by Tom Woodruff who had earlier reached first base on a hard grounder misplayed by the shortstop. The only other base runner for the Colonials was Beau Pritchett who had drawn a walk in the second inning. The Colonials sent four pitchers to the mound searching for an answer against the Statesmen who jumped out to a 13-0 lead after two innings. Coach Gardziel had to be pleased with the performance of Travis Triggs who was able to cool off the opponent's hot bats. Sophomore Matt Callahan saw his first varsity action by successfully handling the catching duties in place of Alan Allworth. Alan suffered a season ending broken jaw in last Friday night's game against South Lakes. Fortunately, Alan did not lose a tooth or knock any loose as had been reported earlier. Alan certainly showed his grit and surprised everyone with the seriousness of his injury by just calmly jogging down to first base after being hit by the pitch. Alan's dad reported that Alan's reset jaw will take two months to heal. Alan, it was a tough way to get everyone's admiration for your courage! The Colonials cannot wait to get Alan back in the lineup next year batting in the power position and handling the catching duties!

4/14/08: Jefferson 5 vs. Marshall 6 in 8 innings
Varsity: South Lakes 11 — Thomas Jefferson 0
[4/11/08] On a beautiful spring night for baseball, Thomas Jefferson's hopes of getting back into the winning column were dashed by another hot pitcher. This time it was Paul Kirchner of the South Lakes Seahawks. This was a far different game than the last time these two teams faced off. In the earlier game, played during the spring break tournament in mid-March, the Colonials handily defeated the Seahawks 8 to 4. It was a different story tonight. It was an ominous start for the Colonials when Alan Allworth, the starting catcher and number three hitter for the Colonials all season, was hit in the face by an errant pitch. Based on Alan's reaction to the pitch, no one had any idea of the seriousness of the injury at the time even though he had a nasty cut on his chin. But it turned out to be much worse than that. Alan will under go surgery for a broken jaw. He also lost a tooth and several others were knocked loose. He will be out of action for the remainder of the season.
It did not get any better for the Colonials on this night. For the second consecutive game, the Colonials were held to only one hit, a single by Colonials pitcher Mason Freedman; and only one runner, Alex Radcliffe, was able to reach second base during the game. As has been the pattern the last couple of games, the Colonials put themselves at a disadvantage early by letting the opposing team jump out to a big lead. The Seahawks led 8-0 after the first two innings. Unlike the last two games, Colonial errors did not play a major factor in the score. This time only two errors resulted in two of the eight runs. Several Colonial players, including Jacob McAuliffe, Wes Stukenbroeker, Travis Triggs, and Brian Tubergen experienced regular season varsity action last night. Freshman Thomas Woodruff filled in admirably for Alan behind the plate.
Varsity: McLean 8 — Jefferson 2
[4/9/08] After a barrage of 10 hits by Thomas Jefferson batters against Madison the night before, the TJ bats fell silent against a fine pitching display by three McLean pitchers. The Colonials managed only a lone hit, a double by Jonathan Wildes that scored Beau Pritchett and Mason Freedman who were on the base paths because of an error and walk, respectively. Only two other contacts with the Jefferson bats during the game left the confines of the infield, unfortunately both were outs. Defensively, two infield errors in the first inning again did not help a solid effort by TJ starting pitcher Chris Kilgore who ended up incurring only one earned run out of the five runs tallied by McLean in the inning. The highlight of the evening for the Colonials, however, was the swagger shown by Beau Pritchett on the mound. Pritchett closed out the pitching duties for the Colonials by giving up only one hit over the last three innings to shut down the Highlanders.
JV: Jefferson vs. McLean
4/9/08 — Jefferson 7 vs. Mclean 6.
JV: Jefferson vs. Madison
4/8/08 — Jefferson 2 vs. Madison 22 in 5 innings.
Varsity: Jefferson 5 — Madison 11
Before last night's game (4/8/08), the last time the Thomas Jefferson Colonials and the Madison Warhawks played each other on a diamond, Thomas Jefferson prevailed in a big win 5-4. At the time, Madison was rated by USA Today as the #3 high school baseball team in the country. Although Madison was not ranked by USA Today this year, they still brought a talented and senior laden team to their home field to faceoff against TJ. Seven of the nine starting Madison batters were seniors and only three Jefferson seniors started last nights game — Alex Radcliffe and J.B. Vande Sand, who both started in last year's game against Madison, and designated hitter Beau Pritchett. Sophomore pitcher Chris Kilgore was given the starting assignment by Coach Gardziel. Chris did a nice job for three innings keeping the ball in the strike zone. Three untimely infield errors, however, helped Madison build an 8-2 lead after three innings. After the third inning, however, the Colonials played the Warhawks even up. The fourth and final senior on TJ's squad, Tom Rudelius, came in to pitch in relief. The Warhawks were only able to score three runs during the next three innings. Their run total was matched by the Colonials in their half of the sixth inning thanks to singles by Ryan Stumvoll and Jeff Siebach and timely doubles by Jonathan Wildes and Alan Allworth.
Varsity: Stone Bridge 6 — Thomas Jefferson 2
The Thomas Jefferson Colonials lost a district game 6-2 against the Stone Bridge Bulldogs on Tuesday night (4/1/08). Mason Freedman had a strong outing on the mound but three Colonial errors resulted in four unearned Stone Bridge runs. J.B. Vande Sand collected two of the five Colonial hits with a single and a double. Mason Freedman added a key double of his own to knock in both Colonial runs in the 7th inning. But the highlight of the night was two plays by Johnnie Wildes who proved that he owns center field. Wildes made a leaping catch at the fence to end the Bulldogs threat in the 1st and an even more spectacular running and tumbling catch to close out the 3rd inning. Freshman Tom Woodruff started his first Varsity District baseball game at 3rd base for the Colonials.
JV: TJ vs Stone Bridge
4/1/08 — JV baseball Jefferson 0 vs. Stone Bridge 17 in 5 innings.
Varsity: Langley Saxons 17 — TJ Colonials 6
In the season opening home game (3/28/08) for TJ, Langley wasted no time by striking in the top of the first inning. The big blow was a two out home run shot by Eddie Gonzales, one of two home runs by Gonzales on the night. After trailing 7-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, TJ got untracked and responded with four runs. J. B. Vande Sand fouled off several 3-2 pitches and drew a walk. Jeff Siebach followed with a sharp double to the gap between center and right field. Following Beau Pritchett's single to left field, Mason Freedman and Jonathan Wildes also tallied doubles to round out the scoring during the inning. Langley wasted no time, however, and responded with 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning to complete their scoring. TJ lost by 10 run rule in 5 innings.
JV: TJ vs. Langley — 3/28/08
JV Baseball Colonials lost to Langley 13-3 by ten run rule in 6 innings.
