Team Results

Liberty District Honors

Meghan Mutchler, the stellar freshman pitcher for the softball team, was recognized in the Liberty District as the first team pitcher by a unanimous vote of the other District softball managers. With a batting average of .509, she had two home runs and nine doubles. During the season, Meghan struck out 170 batters and had an earned run average of 3.146. She is joined by juniors Amy Plunk (catcher) and Kate Cooper (first base), who earned All District Honorable Mention honors.

Gone Yard

1 May 2007 - How many ways can you say it? Gone Yard. Four Bagger. Round Tripper. DINGER. Over the Fence. H-O-M-E-R-U-N! However you say it – it was pretty and it was the only earned run of the evening. Hit by Meghan Mutchler in the top of the 6th inning against McLean, the freshman laid claim to the first home run of the season for the Thomas Jefferson team. On the mound, Mutchler allowed just one hit for the game and provided two thirds of the team's defensive outs with 10 strike outs and three assists in the six innings that the Highlanders batted.

Mutchler also singled in the first, and Amy Plunk had two singles (one in the fourth inning and one in the sixth). But the team was unable to convert the opportunities into runs. Catcher Plunk added to her pick off count with another great throwdown to shortstop Smith to catch a runner trying to get to second. Determined to stand her ground, Plunk also captured a zinger from Mutchler to lay a hard tag on a runner trying to score. Running hard to catch a bunted fly ball in the bottom of the 6th inning, third baseman Toby Lowenstein helped make short work of the last McLean inning at bat.

Applying Relativity to TJ Softball

24 April 2007 - The TJ softball team is learning about relativity on the softball field as well as in the classroom. That is, the Lady Colonial squad is showing consistent improvements relative to where they started the season. Take the last game with Langley for example. In the first match up against top-ranked Langley, the game finished in the 5th inning with a 17-0 score. In the last meeting, the team made it through the first 6 innings with only 5 runs scored against them. Pitcher Kiley Sheehy and her defense combined to keep Saxon runs to a manageable number. Sophomore Sheehy consistently kept most of the Saxons off balance and off base with her solid pitching.

Defensively, everyone on the squad contributed: first baseman Kate Cooper (9 putouts), second basemen Emily Schulz (1 putout) and Sydney Schrider (2 putouts), third baseman Toby Lowenstein (3 assists, 1 putout), shortstop Meghan Mutchler (4 assists, 1 putout), leftfielder Jenn Gilbert (1 putout), centerfielder Hope Smith (4 putouts), catcher Amy Plunk (1 putout) and pitcher Sheehy (2 assists and a strikeout). The Saxons didn't really start hitting until the seventh inning when right fielder Kate Phillips kept a ball hit to the fence from turning into a home run. So with a final score of 10-0, the Colonials can be proud of the effort of the evening and of the lesson in relativity they are teaching us all.

Colonial Bats Heat Up the Night

April 17, 2007 - In frigid, windy weather where players used hand warmers to keep warm between innings, the Lady Colonials kept their bats hot to defeat Marshall High School 5-4. Kate Cooper and Meghan Mutchler both hit singles in the first inning to present an immediate threat to the Marshall Statesmen. Catcher Amy Plunk brought both hitters in with a strategic double to centerfield. Another single by Cooper in the second inning brought in teammate Mandy Rohrer, placed on base with a walk, giving the Colonials a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. The Colonials were unable to captialize on a lead-off double by Mutchler in the 3rd inning, but Mutchler hit another line-drive double in the 5th inning to bring in Hope Smith (on base with a walk) and run number 4 for the Colonials. Erin Glennon, courtesy runner for pitcher Mutchler, advanced to third base with a single by Rohrer and scored the 5th run when left fielder Kiley Sheehey found green with a single to right field. Marshall didn't start to hit until the 6th inning, scoring 3 runs from a well-timed triple following some defensive errors by TJ that placed Marshall players on base. Marshall eked out one more run in the bottom of the 7th from a walk and a hard hit single. A key play by center fielder Mandy Roher kept the single from becoming a double and putting Marshall in scoring position for the tying run. The victory was cinched by second baseman Kate Phillips with a determined ground out play to first.

Colonials Romp!

The Thomas Jefferson Colonials made Friday the 13th their ally this evening, handing the South Lakes Seahawks a 2-0 defeat at TJ Park. The TJ Colonials started early and never let up on the pressure – placing runners on base in every inning as Colonial's pitcher Meghan Mutchler threw a no-hitter against the Seahawks. Sophomore Kiley Sheehey knocked in both runs for Thomas Jefferson in the bottom of the first. Mutchler went 3 for 3 at the plate with 2 hits and a walk. Mandy Rohrer and Kate Phillips each offered up nice singles to round out the offense. Shortstop Hope Smith, first baseman Kate Cooper and second baseman Kate Phillips provided solid defense throughout the game not letting anything get past them. The most applauded play of the evening, though, came when catcher Amy Plunk made a perfect throwdown to the shortstop to peg out a runner trying to steal second. Congratulations to the Lady Colonials on the win!

Colonials Go 14 Innings in District Opener

The TJ Lady Colonials offered up a full evening of thrills in their opening district game against WT Woodson High School on Tuesday, March 20. The game went almost three and a half hours for a full 14 innings before Woodson pulled out a 3-1 win. Freshman ace pitcher Meghan Mutchler delivered 26 strike outs and gave up just 3 hits for the game. Junior Kate Cooper captured 11 put outs at first base. Meghan and Kate led the team with 4 and 3 hits respectively. Junior Amy Plunk, and freshmen Hope Smith and Emily Schultz each delivered singles for 10 team hits. Senior Jen Gilbert provided some key defensive plays at center field but had to leave the field late in the game due to an injury.

The Lady Colonials are looking forward to a rematch on April 18.
