Coach O'Reilly is starting his second year as a Had Footbal Coach and the Assistant Director of Student Activities at TJ. He is a graduate of Stonewall High School in Manassas where he played football. He is a 1981 graduate of the College of William and Mary, where he had a full athletic scholarship and was a three-year letter winner at offensive guard and tackle. Coach O'Reilly was the Offensive Coordinator at Stonewall Jackson High School, helping to lead the Raiders to 9 playoff appearances in 15 years. Prior to coming to TJ, he held a coaching position at Salem High School in Virginia Beach, VA, where last season the offense was #10 in the Eastern Region in total yards. He and his wife Sheila have been married for six years, and have a five year old son, Caleb and a son Tyler, born last Spring.
Coach Holsclaw, the Assistant Offensive Line Coach, is a second year coarch at TJ. A long-time resident of Manassas, the fraduate of Ferrum College is currently the Head Track and Field Coach at Madison High School in Vienna. Coach Holsclaw has coaced at Annandale, Osbourn, Stonewall and Salem High Schools. Tracey and his wife Tan have just celebrated their third wedding anniversary.
Coack Cooke, although another second year coach at TJ, has been an assistant coach in Fairfax County for years. He is the Defensive Line Coach, and has coached at Herndon, Stuart, and Lee High Scools. He returned to the county in 2000 from Arizona, where he taught Physical Education and coached Football.
Coach Fry is the Assistant Line Coach. Coach Fry is an employee of Fairfax County Schools, teching Special Ed at james Madison HS. Coach Fry attended Chantilly HS where he played running back and linebacker. He was coached by former TJ Coach Ken Kincaid. This is Coach Frye's second year at TJ. He is engaged o be married - which will happen "soon".
Coach napolitano is starting his first hear at TJ as the Head Coach of the Fresshman football team. A Ne York (Long Island) native, Coach Napolitano attended Deerpark HS, where he played football as a running back and full back. He graduated from Ithaca College in New York State, and is a Physical Education teacher at Columbia Elementary School. He is single.
Coach Travis, who atttended George Mason University, majoring in history, returns for his 11th year with TJ football. He is also the JV Basketball head coach, assistant coach for Varsity Basketball, and the JV Baseball head coach. Coach Travis was on the coaching staff at West Potomac H.S. in 1989 ( Basketball) and 1990 ( Football) when West Potomac won their second consecutive State Champioship. He has also helped in the development of All-State Wide Receivers Gordon Avery ,Stu Greene and Brandon Buchanan; All-Region Wide Receiver Chino Rodriguez; and All-District Defensive Back Sonny Louie. Coach Travis works on the Security Staff at TJ.
Coach Lucas jins TJ for his first year as the Varsity Offensive line coach. He is a native of Stanley, VA, where he played football at Page County HS at offensive tackle and defensive end. Coach Lucas graduated from Longwood College as a Physical Education major and is teaching at Mosby Woods Elementary School. He previously coached at his Alma Mater, Page County HS before moving to the Northern Virginia area. He is single.
Coach James, who graduated from CW Post College, coaches the JV team as the Head Coach, and the varsity team as an Assistant Coach. Out of Football season, Coach James is the head coach for Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field, and has been the Cross Country Coach. Among his many coaching highlights, Coach James coached the 1996 (class of '99) Freshman team to the best record in school history, the 1990 and 1992 JV squads to the best records in school history, coached one All State and four All District wide receivers. As the Track Coach, he has led the Girls Indoor Track and Field Team to the Virginia AAA State Championship and has been honored as a Coach of the Year by the Washington Post. Coach James has been at TJ for many years as a PE teacher.
Coach Moore has been here at Jefferson since 1989. He was in the Air Force for 21 years, retiring as an (E-7) Master Sergeant. Coach Moore will be coaching the Freshman Team for the second year. Coach Moore is very impressed with the program here at Jefferson. He says: "I'm awed by the fact that the players never get down, and are always giving 110%. There has never been any kind of a defeatist attitude in coaches or players. I really appreciate the positive attitude in the program."
Coach Talley enters his first ear as the assistant girls tennis coach. Coach Talley was born and raised in Alexandria. A graduate of TC Williams HS, he was on the Track team in HS and was the 1971 State Champion in the half mile. He is a graduate of The George Washington University with a degree in Sociaolgy. Coach Talley has been coaching tennis for years in private clubs around the area, and has a hobby in relic hunting, primarily from the Civil War.
A graduate of the University of Maryland where he majored in Mechanical Engineering, Coach Leaf, a Technology teacher at TJ starts his first year as the TJ golf coach. A native of New York, Coach Leaf grew up in Silver Spring, MD, where he played basketball in high school. He took up golf later in life. He is also an Assistant Boys Basketball coach, and has spent 36 years officiating football, including the NCAA Division I-AA Football National Championship in 2000. Coach Leaf considers coaching "an exension of teaching and managing, both of which I have done successfully".
Coach Ryan enters his eighth year of coaching at TJ, his sixth as Cross Country Coach. He is also the Assistant Indoor and Outdoor Track coach. Coach Ryan, a native of the western part of the US, is a graduate of James Madison University in Political Science. He recently go married to a young lady he met at a farewell party for another TJ coach two years ago - TJ played "matchmaker". He admits that he would never have been at that party if he had not been connected to Jefferson.
Coach Davis, a teacher at TJ since 1985, is also the Head Coach of the Softball team. A graduate of Longwood College with a degree in Physical Education, Coach Davis played field hockey and lacrosse while in school. In addition to field hockey and softball, Coach Davis has also coached basketball.
Coach Akers is in her third season at TJ, but first as head Cheerleading coach. A native of Springfield, she attended Lee HS where she cheered all four years and also three years on competitive all-star teams. Coach Akers is entering her Senior yea at George Mason University where she is majoring in Management. She was on the Mason Cheerleading squad for two years. Ms Akers also coaches a competitve squad and gymnastics.
Coach Hunt returns for yer third year of coaching at TJ as one of the Cheerleadin coahes. She was raised in Northern Virginia and attended ar-Field HS where she was a cheerleader in school and also on competitive squads. A recent graduate of George Mason University where she majored in Health, Finess and Recreation Resources, she was a member of the nationally ranked first All-Girl cheerleading squad. She is working at Fitness resources and is unmarried.
Coach Johnson, a native of Pennington Gap, VA is a graduate of Lee HS and plaed two years of varsity volleyball. She is a graduate of Ferrum College with a degree in Sports Medicine, and where she continued to play volleyball all four years. Last year she was the assistant varsity volleyball coach at Oakton HS in the fall and assistant track coach at James Madison HS. Coach Johnson is emplyed at NJVC a government contracting agency and is single.
Coch Billups is stating her first year at TJ and first coaching job. Rasied in Elgin, South Carolina, she played volleyball and basketball at Lugoff-Elgin HS. She graduated from Queens College in Charlottte, NC in 2000. While in college on both athletic and academic scholarships, she played volleyball and basketball. Coach Billups, commonly known as "Coach TQ", majored in Art and Business Administration. She is currently undegoing the certification process for teaching high school.
Although born in Seattle, Coach Allen was raised in Northern Virginia, attending Falls Church HS and graduating from James Madison Univeristy with a degree in business. Her interest in volleyball began eight years ago when she joined a Sand Volleyball doubles team. Subsequently she moved to Indoor Sixes. She is a Certified Scorekeeper and Referee, has taught junior programs and has run her own clinics. This is Coach Allen's first high school coaching experience. She has two children, a daughter in 5th grade and a son who is starting Falls Church HS this year.
Coach Todd Spitalny grew up in Richmond playing soccer from the age of 4. He was a member of a State Team until he was 12. Although he played Forward most of his youth, when he came to Marymount College to play soccer, he became a Goalie. A recent Business Administraion graduate of Marymount, Coach Spitalny how has his own Goal Keeping School that he and a friend have opened, and he is also an Assistant Soccer Coach at Marymount. He loves coaching, and his long-term goal is to be the head coach at a large college. This is his 5th year as a coach at TJ. He was the boys JV soccer coach for 2 years before becoming the girlsy Varsity Coach 3 years ago.
Coach James, a graduate of CW Post College, is head coach of both the girls and boys indoor and outdoor track teams. He has helmed this position for seventeen years. In both 1997 and 1998, Coach James guided the girls indoor team to the Virginia AAA State Championship. In 1997, he received Coach of the Year honors from the Washington Post. Coach James is also a member of the football staff.
Coach Matt, a James Madison University alumnus, is in his seventh year of training long distance runners at TJ. He has been the head cross country coach for five years and is in charge of runners 800 meters-on-up for both the boys and girls track teams.
The Thomas Jefferson Athletic Training Program provides a valuable health care service to the student athletes participating in all sports. Each Virginia Northern Region school employs a National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Certified Head and Assistant Athletic Trainer (ATC).
Athletic training services include prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning of injuries to the physically active. Emergency care and basic injury care are provided to athletes during covered practices and contests. Athletic trainers are also educators in many areas of sports medicine including strength and conditioning training, basic first aid, training room management, nutrition, exercise physiology, human anatomy, and injury care. In practice, Thomas Jefferson's athletic training room staff evaluates and treats the expected muscular and skeletal problems, but they can also treat illness, infections or psychological problems.
It is comforting for students and parents to know that our athletes are under the care of American Medical Association (AMA) recognized allied health care professionals. The Thomas Jefferson Athletic Training Program is prepared to treat any life threatening injury and initiate EMS or 911 if necessary. They are trained and able to revive or sustain an athlete until paramedics arrive. The athletic trainers can also refer athletes to specialists for additional care if needed. Our athletic trainers also assist our Athletic Boosters with physicals and measuring body fat.
Mr. Barry Potoker returns again this year to fill the role of Head Athletic Trainer. He has a Masters of Science degree and a plethora of experience. Mr. Potoker has been a trainer since his college days, where he actively trained for 4 years. He has worked at many sports medicine centers, as well as many basketball camps. He also had an internship with the Philadelphia Eagles who are a member of the NFL.
Ms. Heather Murphy and Ms. Deborah Daigler are serving officially as the Assistant Athletic Trainers, but it is in name only. Both Ms. Murphy and Ms. Daigler have all the duties, authority and certification as Mr. Potoker. Ms. Daigler has a Masters degree in Sports Medicine as well as considerable experience with world class athletes. She teaches Physica at Natioal Cathedral School. Mrs. Daigler has worked with United States Track and Field (USATF) and the United States national girls volleyball team. She also has worked at a clinic in North Dakota prior to arriving at Jefferson. Ms. Murphy has just entered the Fairfax County School system as a Phys Ed tteacher in a middle school.
