17 Mar - Washington-Lee
Down 4-0 after 2 ½ innings the Thomas Jefferson Colonials clawed back and held on for an exciting 5-4 win over the visiting Washington-Lee Generals in a non-District varsity baseball season opener for both squads.
Senior righthander Sam Costanzo took the hill for the Colonials against righthander Evan Howell of the Generals. Costanzo got off to a shaky start in the first. Generals' centerfielder Brian Nettles enticed a base on balls to lead off the game and moved to second on a wild pitch. Colonials' centerfielder Shane Warren made an outstanding running catch to deep centerfield for the first out, Nettles scampering back to second. Nettles stole third and scored the first run on a wild throw to the plate by second baseman Nick Bonard on a ground ball by left fielder Dan Abbate. Abbate moved to second on the error. First baseman Ian Metzger hit a ground ball single up the middle to drive in Abbate. A double by DH Charles Amazeen put runners on second and third. Metzger was thrown out at the plate, shortstop Greg Seroka to catcher Brad Blomstrom for the second out. Generals' shorstop Michael Berger ended the scoring in the first with a line drive, RBI single to left. The Generals led, 3-0.
The Colonials threatened in their half of the first. Warren led off with a ground ball single to right and advanced to third on a single by right fielder Robert Gerth. Gerth stole second. Costanzo hit a hard fly ball to right field and Warren was thrown out at the plate attempting to score. The replay showed that Warren's foot had touched the plate before the tag. First baseman Robert Simon took a called third strike to end the threat.
The Generals lead moved to 4-0 in the top of the third on a double to right centerfield by Abbate, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly to center by Amazeen.
The Colonials bounced back with 3 runs in the bottom of the third. After one out Warren singled and stole second. Gerth hit a ground ball single to right and Warren advanced to third and scored on Costanzo's line drive single to right center, Gerth moving to third. Howell balked in Gerth with Costanzo going to second. Costanzo scored on a two-out ground single to left by left fielder Dan Stewart. Stewart stole second but was stranded as DH Brian Cannon grounded to short to end the inning. The Generals led, 4-3.
The Colonials took the lead with 2 runs in the bottom of the fourth. After one out Seroka beat out an infield hit to short and stole second. Blomstrom induced a base on balls and both runners moved up on a passed ball. Warren stuck out for the second out but Howell's control failed him as both Seroka and Blomstrom scored on wild pitches. The Colonials held a 5-4 lead they would not relinquish.
Warren came in to relieve Costanzo in the top of the fifth and shut down the Generals on one hit over the last three innings. Costanzo earns the win and Warren the save.
Costanzo pitched 4 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits. He struck out 4 and walked 2. Warren followed with 3 innings and allowed no runs, 1 hit, struck out 3, and walked 1. Howell pitched 5 innings and allowed 5 runs (earned) on 8 hits. He struck out 6 and walked 1. Abbate pitched 1 inning and allowed no runs, 1 hit, struck out 1, and walked none.
Warren and Gerth led the offense with 2 hits in 3 at bats and both scored a run. Cannon had 2 hits. Costanzo had a hit, run, and RBI. Stewart had a hit and RBI and Seroka had a hit and run scored. Blomstrom scored what proved to be the winning run.
Totals: Colonials 5 runs, 9 hits, 3 errors, and 4 left on base; Generals 4 runs, 7 hits, 0 errors, and 7 left on base.
The next Colonials game is another non-District game at home against Wakefield on Thursday, March 20. Game time is 6PM.
Great home opener, as Jefferson, down 4-0, comes back to beat Washington-Lee 5-4. Bryan Cannon, Robert Gerth, and Shane Warren each had 2 hits. With a strong relief effort by Shane Warren, starting pitcher Sam Costanzo comes away with the win.

TJ's Warren does in W-L, with glove, arm
By S. Daniel Means, March 21, 2003, Connection Newspapers
After racking up a 4-0 lead in only 2 1/2 innings, the Washington-Lee Generals looked as if they would cruise on in with an opening-game victory in 2003, on the baseball diamond at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. That was before a sophomore with a familiar last name took the Colonials’ fate in his young hands and propelled the magnet school to a 5-4 non-district victory on Monday night in Annandale.
"We started off kind of shaky," said Shane Warren, the Colonials’ center fielder and relief pitcher, who garnered a save on the night. "We were nervous because we've only been able to get in two or three practices before this game."
That apprehension proved detrimental early in the game, as Generals center fielder Brian Nettles scored the first of three runs in the team’s first at-bat.
"After losing to Woodson, 19-2 in a scrimmage, and then when W-L jumped out on us 4-0, I didn't expect [to pull out the victory]," said second-year Colonials skipper Dan Pototsky.
The Jefferson coach said there was one thing he did expect in the school's first home game of the season — the play of Warren, his budding sophomore star.
"I was not surprised at that," said the coach of a second generation of sports stars named Warren, who was instrumental in the win.
For the past four years, Shane's older brother, Justin, was Mr. Colonial, as the all-district star lettered in three sports annually during his time on campus.
Shane, a 5-foot-8 inch, 160-pound 10th-grader said he only hopes he'll be as good as his brother, who made all-district teams in the three sports he participated in at Jefferson.
"He was actually at the game," said Shane, as he spoke proudly of his idol/mentor. "He's home from Princeton on spring break."
After a double by W-L left-fielder Dan Abbate and a wild pitch by Jefferson starter Sam Costanzo, DH Charles Amazeen recorded the fourth and final run for the Generals on a sacrifice fly.
But then the bat and the pitching arm of Warren took over, and the Colonials scored five unanswered runs to take the victory. In three innings of relief, Warren allowed no runs on one hit and notched three K's with one base on balls.
Even the elder former TJ star was impressed.
"I'm not at all surprised," said Justin Warren, as he spoke of his brother, younger by three years. Justin, who will attempt to walk onto the Princeton Tigers’ football team this fall, said he knew his brother would do well this year.
Generals head coach Doug Grove was unavailable for comment.
Baseball Roundup
John Keim, Journal Newspapers, 21.03.2003
COACH: Dan Pototsky (second year)
LAST YEAR: 9-11, district quarterfinalist
KEY RETURNING PLAYERS: Shane Warren (P/CF, So.), Sam Costanzo (P/CF, Sr.), Robert Simon (1B, Sr.)
KEEP AN EYE ON: Daniel Stewart (OF, Jr.), Will Averill (3B, So.), Robert Gerth (OF, So.)
OUTLOOK: The Colonials were inexperienced last year; they'll be young and inexperienced this year. So they've taken a long-term approach as six sophomores will likely start. The trick is maintaining confidence while trying to compete in the area's top district. They're still experimenting with who should play where.
Warren gives them a good starting point: he batted .300 as a freshman and was named the Colonials' most valuable player. He and Costanzo will be the top two pitchers.
24 March - COLONIALS CALM WARRIORS
Catcher Brad Blomstrom's two-out, bases-loaded clearing double in the bottom of the second proved to be the decisive blow as Thomas Jefferson beat Wakefield, 11-7, in a non-District game at Jefferson on Monday, March 24. Jefferson's record moves to 2-0.
Sophomore Robert Gerth took the hill in his first start for the Colonials. After striking out the Warriors' leadoff hitter he was greeted by a Texas-league double to right by shortstop Kyle Scott followed by a two-run blast to right centerfield by centerfielder Brad Beck. Gerth settled down and allowed a harmless single over the next 2 2/3 innings assisted by two stellar diving catches by Colonials' second baseman, Nick Bonard, one for a double play.
After the Warriors scored 2 runs in the top of the first the Colonials responded with 5 runs in their half of the frame. Wakefield starter Chris Guest did not get an out and was removed after pitching to 5 batters. Centerfielder Shane Warren led off with a base on balls and Gerth singled to right, Warren stopping at second. Jonathan Wills pinch ran for Gerth. Right fielder Sam Costanzo drove in Warren with a single to right, Wills stopping at second. First baseman Robert Simon received his first of three bases on balls to load the bases and designated hitter Brian Cannon was hit by a pitch to score Wills bases remaining loaded. Wakefield's right fielder Michael Chin came in to replace Guest and struck out Colonials' left fielder, Dan Stewart, looking on a pitch which appeared high and out of the strike zone. Shorstop Greg Seroka drove in Costanzo with a fielder's choice. Blomstrom bunted for a hit to drive in Simon and third sacker Will Averill singled to left to drive in Seroka and end the scoring. The Colonials led, 5-2.
In the bottom of the third after two outs Cannon singled up the middle and moved to second on a groundball to third by Stewart which was booted. Seroka grounded to first and Wakefield committed another error loading the bases. On a 1-0 pitch Blomstrom drove the ball over Beck's head in centerfield. Averill drove in Blomstrom with a double over the bag at third as the Colonials tallied 4 runs. The Colonials' lead jumped to 9-2.
Phil Moir replaced Gerth in the fourth. Catcher Alex Rossi led off with a double to the fence in left followed by first baseman Marshall Williams double down the right field line. After hitting third baseman Michael Chambers with a pitch the Colonials were aided by poor base running. DH Mikael Cangialosi routinely flied out to Costanzo who fired to second as Williams wandered off the bagged and was called out for failing to return in time. Moir got the final out Blomstrom to Simon. The Colonials led, 9-3.
Scott Brandt replaced Moir in the fifth and immediately ran into trouble. He hit the first man he faced and after one out gave up an infield hit, two bases on balls, and double in succession. He was aided by continued Wakefield base running miscues. Kyle Scott was thrown out attempting to steal third with one out and two on with Beck at the plate and Williams was thrown out attempting to score from second base on an Averill throwing error, Simon to Blomstrom to end the inning. After the dust cleared the Colonials lead was cut to 9-6.
The Colonials responded with 2 in the fifth. After one out Gerth reached on an infield hit and stole second. Costanzo followed with an infield hit Gerth moving to third. Gerth scored on an errant pick-off attempt by Rossi as Costanzo moved to second. After a walk to Simon, Brandt helped his own cause by singling to right to drive in Costanzo. The Colonials now led, 11-6.
Warren's diving catch in short centerfield to end the inning helped Brandt escape damage in the sixth. In the seventh 3 consecutive singles off Brandt after one out led to the final Warriors' run.
Jefferson totals: 11 runs, 11 hits, 1 error, and 8 left on base; Wakefield: 7 runs, 11 hits, 3 errors, and 6 left on base.
Gerth pitched 3 innings, allowed 2 runs (earned) on 5 hits, struck out 5, hit 1 batsman, and issued no bases on balls. He is credited with the win. Moir worked 1 inning, allowed 1 run (earned) on 2 hits, had no strikeouts nor bases on balls, and hit 1 batsman. Brandt finished with 3 innings, allowed 4 runs (earned) on 6 hits, struck out none, issued 2 bases on balls, and hit 1 batsman. Wakefield's Guest pitched to 5 batsmen, allowed 4 runs (earned) on 2 hits, issued 2 bases on balls, and hit 1 batsman. Chin pitched 5 innings and allowed 7 runs (2 earned) on 9 hits, struck out 5, issued 3 bases on balls, and hit 1 batsman. Williams finished with 1 inning, allowed no runs, no hits, struck out none, and walked none.
The bottom of the Colonials' order did the most damage. No. 8 in the order, Blomstrom, was 2-4 with a run and 4 RBIs. No. 9 in the order, Averill, was 2-4 with 2 RBIs. Gerth and Costanzo had 2 hits apiece and Costanzo scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Seroka was 1-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Cannon was 1-3 with a run scored and RBI. Brandt was 1-1 with an RBI. Wakefield's leader was Williams with 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Beck was 2-3 with 3 runs and 2 RBI.s. Scott had 3 hits and scored a run.
The next game is Tuesday, March 25, at Oakton HS, a Concorde District game. Game time is 6:30PM.
Win #2 as Jefferson beats Wakefield 11-7. TJ hitters (2 hits each by Will Averill, Brad Blomstrom (4 rbi), Sam Costanzo, and Robert Gerth) provided ample runs for pitchers Robert Gerth, Phil Moir, and Scott Brandt.

March 25 - COUGARS CLAW COLONIALS
Oakton's catcher Ed Jablonski's grand slam home run in the bottom of the third erased a 2-0 deficit as the Cougars handed Thomas Jefferson its first loss of the season and first loss in Concorde District play. Oakton right-handed starter Brad Keipe allowed 5 hits and went the distance for the 8-2 win at home on Tuesday.

Costanzo's base on balls in the second was a precursor of events to occur in the Oakton third. After one out Oakton's leadoff hitter and second baseman David Miller singled to center. Costanzo's control failed as he issued bases on balls to left fielder Taylor Billingsley and right fielder Jared Kubin to load the bases with no outs. Jefferson growing, learning
With six sophomores playing key roles, Jefferson knew this season was more about growth than wins. Turns out the Colonials are getting a little of both.
Jefferson is 3-0 outside the Concorde District; 0-4 in it. But the Colonials are optimistic based on the results.
"We're making progress," Jefferson coach Dan Pototsky said. "We've been in all the games so far. It's a gradual thing."
South Lakes beat Jefferson, 2-0, last week as Colonials senior pitcher Sam Costanzo pitched a two-hitter and struck out 10. Westfield defeated Jefferson, 8-2, but what Pototsky liked is that it was 2-2 in the fifth.
Five sophomores have received at least 17 at-bats, led by Shane Warren, who is batting .500. Two other sophomores, designated hitter/utility player Bryan Cannon and pitcher Robert Gerth, nearly didn't make the varsity. But Cannon is hitting .421, and Gerth is 1-0 with a 1.40 ERA and batting .292. Costanzo is 1-3 with a 3.26 ERA.
The Colonials are scheduled to play Centreville and Herndon this week. They'll play in a round robin wood bat tournament next week at Jefferson.

Stewart scored on the throwing error and Averill moved to second but was stranded as Warren grounded out and Gerth flew out. The Colonials led, 7-0.
The Eagles threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh as Warren issued bases on balls to Donohoe and Heislup to open the inning. Host Jefferson wins wood bat tourney
Six-run sixth keys Colonials win over Wolverines
By BRIAN MCNALLY Journal staff writer, 17.04.2003
Four area baseball teams spent the past five days playing the sport the way they do in the big leagues.
Jefferson, Falls Church, West Potomac and Edison each played four games over five days at the Jefferson Spring Break Tournament, hitting with the wooden bats used by professional baseball teams instead of their normal aluminum bats.
In the end, it was the host Colonials who came away with the tournament trophy, breaking open a tight championship game with West Potomac courtesy of a six-run sixth inning and earning an 8-2 victory on Wednesday.
"I think this tournament was a good experience for us," said Jefferson sophomore Shane Warren, the team's starting pitcher on Wednesday. "It might hurt our averages a little bit, but it was a nice way to play for a few days."
Warren, coming off a two-hit shutout of Edison on Saturday, went the distance, allowing seven hits and two runs in seven innings while striking out six batters for the Colonials (6-5). Warren, who lives in West Potomac's school district, even got a laugh when he accidentally plunked the Wolverines' John Walker, one of his best friends, with a pitch. Walker's father coached Warren in Little League and Babe Ruth play.
"This is the first year we've done it this way, with the wood bats," said Jefferson coach Dan Pototsky. "One of the things I like about it is that you play so many games in such a short period of time that it's easier on the pitchers. And I'd rather watch a 3-1 game than a 15-9 game any time."
A key play in the game occurred in the bottom of the fifth with Jefferson nursing a 2-1 lead and West Potomac senior Thomas Parker standing on second base with one out.
Wolverines junior varsity call-up Steve Nichols laced a line drive down the line in right, but Jefferson right fielder Will Averill made a fine running catch, spun, and fired back to second. Parker returned to the bag to tag up and then raced to third base, but the umpire ruled he never touched second and called him out, ending the rally.
"That was a big play for Will," Warren said. "He had started off the year at third base and hadn't play right field that much, so we were pretty happy to see him make a great play like that."
The Colonials responded with six runs in the top of the sixth and put the game away. West Potomac senior reliever Larry Greene walked in a run, and Averill and junior Nick Bonard each added two-run singles for Jefferson.
Parker had a strong day for West Potomac, batting 2-for-4 with two singles and an RBI. Wolverines starter Jimmy Fernandes allowed four hits and five runs in 5 innings of work, but walked six. Fernandes retired the Colonials in order in the first, third and fifth innings and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the second before giving way to Greene in the sixth.
Despite the loss, West Potomac (4-5) appeared to get back on track during the tournament, winning three games after starting the season 1-4.
Jefferson also went 3-1 during the tournament- its only loss a 2-1 setback on Sunday against the Wolverines during round-robin play. The Colonials have a young team - Potrotsky starts five sophomores - but earning a trophy should give them a boost heading back into Concorde District play, where Jefferson has struggled so far.
"This tournament should help our confidence a lot," said Colonials senior captain Sam Costanzo, who singled and scored a run during the six-run rally in the sixth. "We're a young team and we play in a tough district so we needed to play well before we play those teams again."
21 Apr - 'CATS SCRATCH COLONIALS
The Centreville Wildcats ran their record to 10-1 overall and 3-1 in the Concorde District with a 5-1 victory over the Thomas Jefferson Colonials at Centreville on Monday, April 21. The Colonials dropped to 6-6 and 0-5 in the District.
Wildcats' starting pitcher Trevor House scattered 5 hits to earn the win with an inning of relief help from Chuck Mellies. The Colonials' starter Sam Costanzo (1-5) took the loss.
The Wildcats scored two in the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter Brandon Valus was walked by Costanzo and moved to second on a single up the middle by designated hitter Joe Sheridan. Costanzo then hit shortstop Ryan Bell with a pitch to load the bases. Right fielder Chuck Mellies grounded into a double play, shorstop Greg Seroka to second baseman Nick Bonard to first baseman Bryan Cannon, as Valus scored. Sheridan moved to third and with two outs scored on a wild pitch. The inning could have been much worse for the Colonials as the Wildcats led, 2-0.
The Colonials had an excellent scoring opportunity in the top of the second. After one out left fielder Daniel Stewart induced a base on balls and moved to second on an infield hit by Seroka. The runners advanced on a groundout by catcher Brad Blomstrom but failed to score as designated hitter Ryan Comes flew out to left field.

13 May - BULLDOGS ELIMINATE COLONIALS
Solo home runs by Westfield shortstop Brandon Snyder and first baseman Ryan Cunningham powered the Bulldogs to a 3-0 win over the Thomas Jefferson Colonials in the "play-in" game of the Concorde District Tournament. Westfield moves on to play Centreville as the season ends for the Colonials. The Colonials finish the season 6-14 overall, 0-13 in District play.
Westfield used four pitchers to hold the Colonials to one hit, a single by starting pitcher and All-District outfielder Shane Warren. Warren went the distance for the Colonials allowing only 5 hits. Unfortunately, 2 went for home runs.
The Colonials fate was determined in the first inning as they left the bases loaded. Westfield starter Justin Bour did not have control in the first. Warren led off the game with a walk on four pitches. Second baseman Nick Bonard followed with a sacrifice bunt moving Warren to second. All-District first baseman Bryan Cannon walked as did centerfielder Sam Costanzo but catcher Brad Blomstrom was caught looking at a called third strike on a 3-2 count and third baseman Greg Seroka grounded out to short.
As been the Colonials downfall most of the season the Bulldogs scored in the first after two outs. Cunningham lined a hard single to center that Warren just did touch with the leather and almost made the grab. Third baseman Mike Bokman doubled over left fielder Robert Gerth's head to drive in Cunningham. That was the only run Westfield needed.
Warren led off the third with a sharp line drive single to left and stole second with his District leading twelfth steal. The Colonials could not advance him as Bonard and Cannon popped to third and Costanzo struck out swinging.
Bour was replaced by John Lloyd in the fourth, Lloyd by Bokman in the sixth, and Bokman by Snyder in the seventh. After Warren's single in the third the Westfield pitchers retired in order the last 15 Colonials they faced.
Snyder's home run was in the third and Cunningham's in the sixth.
Lloyd was the winning pitcher. Bour pitched 3 innings and allowed no runs, 1 hit, struck out 4, and issued 3 bases on balls. Lloyd pitched 2 innings, allowed no runs, no hits, struck out 4, and walked none. Bokman pitched 1 inning, allowed no runs, no hits, struck out 1, and walked none. Snyder finished with 1 inning, allowed no runs, no hits, struck out none, and walked none. Warren (2-5) pitched 7 innings, allowed 3 runs on 5 hits, struck out 7, walked none, and hit 1 batsman.
For the Bulldogs Cunningham was 2-3 with an RBI (HR) and 2 runs. Snyder was 1-3 (HR) with an RBI and run. Bokman was 1-3 with an RBI. Warren was 1-2 with a base on balls.
Totals: Westfield 3 runs, 5 hits, 0 errors, and 3 left on base; Jefferson 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 error, and 4 left on base.
In the three games against Westfield this season the Colonials totaled 5 hits and 2 runs.
See you next year!
Jefferson ends their season losing the play-in game to Westfield 3-0. Shane Warren pitched well (5 hits, 7Ks, no walks), but TJ could only muster 1 hit (Shane Warren) against 4 Bulldog pitchers.Sports Combine
