Coach of the Year

Matt Ryan - Cross Country
Team overcame top runner Joey Bylund's season-ending hip injury to win the Virginia AAA championship, defeating teams from parts of the state whose seasons were not interrupted by the sniper attacks. The Colonials' top five placed within 50 seconds at the state meet; the team also won district and region titles. Also coached Jefferson's girls to second place in the state after they took third in the Northern Region.

Ray Bowers - Mens Tennis
Led Jefferson to its second consecutive undefeated regular season in Virginia AAA Concorde District play, winning 24 straight matches over two seasons. This spring, guided the Colonials to their first district tournament and Northern Region team titles since 2000. Record over four seasons: 68-7.

Matt Shoop - Rowing
The Colonials didn't race a lightweight eight boat at the Virginia scholastic or D.C. area championships in 2002, but this year won silver at the state championships and gold at the area regatta, dethroning national powerhouse T.C. Williams. The varsity eight won silver at both the state and area regattas, and the Colonials' second eight won gold at Stotesbury.
