06 Sep The neophyte TJ freshman football team held their
own against the much larger (in numbers) Woodson team. Despite being
outnumbered by about 3 to 1, the freshman Colonials kept their opponents
from hitting paydirt. In the first half of the scrimmage, the Woodson team
outgained TJ in terms of yardage. But in the second half, the Colonials
made up the difference. The one-hour scrimmage ended scoreless.
Brad Blomstrom, Shane Warren, and the second-string defense were singled
out by the coaches for especially notable performances.
20 Sep In the first football game of the season for TJ freshmen, they were
surprised by the speed of the Mt. Vernon Majors. The first quarter saw Mt.
Vernon running backs score two touchdowns on long runs. The strong
Colonial defense kept them from making the extra points,however,and the
quarter ended 12-0.
The TJ colonials showed much promise in the 2nd quarter, completing
several nice passes to wide receiver,Ryan Conner. The speedy Mt. Vernon
backfield hit paydirt again with a touchdown and successful 2-point
conversion. 2nd quarter score, 20-0.
TJ freshmen remained scoreless in the 3rd quarter in spite of some nice
runs by running back, Shane Warren. The Majors were able to convert an
interception into 6 more points. The Colonial defense thwarted their 2-pt
conversion, and the period ended 26-0.
The 4th quarter brought a 5th TD by another speedy Mt. Vernon player. The
extra-point run gave them two more to wrap up the contest at 34-0.
25 Sep At Tuesday's game at Chantilly, TJ freshmen stunned the Chargers with 3:14 left in the first quarter with a 70-yard touchdown play. QB Chris Monahan handed off the ball to RB Shane Warren, who shot a long pass to WR Will Averill, who dashed the remaining 35 yds or so into paydirt. They did not get their extra 2 points, however. EOQ score was sweet, TJ- 06, Chantilly- 0.
During the 2nd quarter, Chantilly charged systematically down the field to the 8-yd line. They succeeded in scoring the goal and the 2-point conversion. By half-time, the score was 8-6, Chantilly.
The third quarter saw an interception by the Chargers stop TJ's steady advance. Another 13-yd run by Luis Cintron clinched the lead for Chantilly, 14-6.
Fourth quarter action was dominated by the Chargers as they marched down the field and scored with 9-yd and 5-yd touchdown runs, respectively. They were also successful in making their 2-pt conversion and 1-pt kick on the last one. That brought the score to Chantilly- 29, TJ- 06. Just when everyone thought the game was over for TJ, RB Shane Warren surprised the crowd on a kickoff return by finding a hole created by offensive linemen, and took it all the way for a spectacular 70-yd touchdown run. The extra-point run was thwarted.

Freshman Colonials vs. Edison Eagles
In the 1st Qtr, the Colonial defense remained strong in the first quarter, but could not stop the Eagles’ sustained drive to paydirt for the touchdown. The extra-point kick was not good. EOQ score: 0-6
In the 2nd Qtr. Edison managed to get loose early for a successful touchdown. TJ blocked the extra point. Several strong runs by RB Shane Warren enabled TJ to march downfield, but did not make it to paydirt. Kicker Jai Singh came through in a pinch with some great punting. An Edison fumble was recovered by FB Andrew Liu, but Eagles defense remained strong.EOH score: 0-12
In the 3rd Qtr. great Colonial defense including key tackles by SS Will Averill, DL Kyle Branigan, and LB Daniel Butler kept the Eagles from scoring in the third quarter.
In the 4th Qtr. Edison scored early in the fourth quarter on a long pass. The 2-pt. conversion was blocked by TJ. A strong defensive stop was made during one of the plays by TJ’s LB Bryan Cannon. Score: 0-18. An impressive 50-yd kickoff return by RB Shane Warren, plus a strong first-down scramble by QB Chris Monahan got the Colonials within striking distance of paydirt. On the turnover, strong Colonial defense and key tackles by SS Brad Blomstrom, DE Greg Haugh, and SS Will Averill kept the Eagles from scoring again. With less than two minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Colonials got the ball on the Eagles’ 15-yd line. A determined offensive line cleared the way for RB Shane Warren to make the touchdown. The extra point was blocked. Score: 6-18. EOG final score: TJ 6- Edison 18.
11 Oct Freshman Colonials vs.Wakefield Warriors
Congratulations Victorious TJ Freshmen!
Wakefield surprised TJ early in the quarter with one of their running backs getting loose for a 65-yd touchdown run. The extra point was blocked. Score: Wakefield 6, TJ 0.
After the turnover, the Colonials fought back, giving space for two long runs by RB Shane Warren, taking them down to the Warriors’ 15-yd line. The touchdown pass was intercepted. The Colonial defense held tight, and their adversary failed to get the needed downs. On the next round, the Colonials answered in kind. RB Warren took it all the way to paydirt. The extra point was not good. Score: Even at 6-6.
EOQ score: 6-6.
The second quarter saw a nice punt return run by RB Warren, with more yardage gained on short runs. Then came a scramble by QB Chris Monahan for the first down. That drive was unsuccessful, but an impressive defense also kept the Warriors scoreless. On the next Colonial downfield drive, several carries by WR Will Averill gained the first down. With only seconds to go in the quarter, TJ freshmen thrilled fans with a great play, making the 17-yd touchdown. The play was a halfback-option pass from QB Monahan to RB Shane Warren, to WR Will Averill. The extra-point kick was short. Score: Wakefield 6, TJ 12.
Colonial momentum continued in the third quarter. The offensive line opened holes for several first-down runs by RB Warren, and an 8-yd pickup by RB Brad Blomstrom. A quick-kick punt by Warren to the Wakefield 8-yd line kept the Warriors deep in their own territory. An outstanding interception and 27-yd touchdown run by WR/DB David Browning gained the Colonials another 6. The offensive line meant business as they shoved aside their opponents to grant the 2-pt conversion run by Shane Warren. Score: Wakefield 6, TJ 20. TJ defense kept the Warriors from scoring until L/FB David Ramsey recovered a Warrior fumble in the backfield with 4 minutes to go in the quarter. A 15-yd pass reception by TE Sean Smith, and several short runs by RB Warren gained valuable yardage, but no score.
With several minutes left in the quarter, the Colonial defense was relentless, with key open-field tackles by SS Brad Blomstrom, DB Ryan Conner, and DE Yusuf Abugideiri.
The fourth quarter saw more great blocking by the Colonial offensive line, enabling the team to advance systematically downfield into Warrior territory. QB Monahan gained 5 yds with a QB sneak, and another 6 or 7 yds was added by RB Warren for a first down. An impressive 18-yd run by RB Brad Blomstrom took the Colonials to the 2-yd line. QB Monahan took the plunge for the big TD. Score: Wakefield 6, TJ 26. TJ’s defense stuck for the rest of the game, dismantling the Warrior offense.

18 Oct Freshman Colonials vs. Falls Church Jaguars
For most of the first quarter both teams battled for yardage, with key TJ offensive plays by RB Shane Warren, and defensive plays by DB David Browning and DL Chris Gaudino. Toward the end of the first period, Falls Church got loose in TJ territory for a short TD-run to put up the first six. The 2-pt. conversion was blocked.
The Colonials answered in the 2nd period with an impressive 12-yd run by QB Chris Monahan, and a 20-yd. pass completion to WR Ryan Conner. Unfortunately, they lost their momentum on the fumble. The quarter saw key interceptions by DB Faheem Ahmed, and RB Shane Warren, and a key tackle by SS Brad Blomstrom. A short carry by WR Will Averill teased the fans with a key first down, but TJ couldn’t complete the passes they needed to get the pigskin to the endzone. The quarter ended without another score for either team.
The 3rd period also saw the Colonials and Jaguars battle for yardage. TJ produced an impressive 30-yd run by RB Shane Warren for a key first down. Key tackles were made by DB Faheem Ahmed and DE Jai Singh. Neither team scored during the period.
The Jaguars were on the run, intercepting a TJ pass early in the period. They made the first down plays which got them to paydirt, putting up six more points. Their 2-pt conversion was blocked by strong TJ defense. They scored again with 1:45 left in the quarter, but failed on the extra two.
A great kick-off return by RB Shane Warren moved the Colonials downfield by 30 yds., but again, the freshmen fell short. An impressive pinch punt was kicked by TE/DE Jai Singh. Key tackles were contributed by SS Brad Blomstrom.
