In State Quarterfinals, Girls Tennis advances, Boys fall

On Tuesday (5/26) the Northern Region Champion TJ Girls Tennis team defeated suburban Richmond's Deep Run High School to advance, for the fourth straight year, to the State semifinals. Rain forced the match to the indoor courts of Fairfax Racquet Club, where in about two hours, the Girls prevailed 5-1 in the best-of-nine contest (no Doubles plays was necessary). The State tournament now moves to neutral courts in Newport News on Friday, May 29.

The Northern Region Champion TJ Boys fell to suburban Richmond's Deep Run High School 5-2 in State Quarterfinal play on Tuesday (5/26). TJ forced Doubles play in the best-of-nine contest with Singles wins by the Senior Co-Captains at Nos. 5 and 6. Ultimately, in three sets, Deep Run prevailed in the No. 1 Doubles match to secure the victory. Rain forced the over four-hour match to the indoor courts at Burke Racquet & Swim Club.

It was an unusual Quarterfinal this year with the same high school (TJ) winning both Boys and Girls Northern Region and the same high school (Deep Run) finishing second in both Boys and Girls Central Region.

Big Day for TJ Sports — 5/15/09

Boys Tennis claimed the 2009 Northern Region title defeating three-time State champion Robinson in an exciting four-hour match. Contest is composed of six Singles matches and three Doubles matches; and a team needs to win five matches for victory. Robinson led 4-2 after Singles, meaning TJ had to win all three Doubles matches — and they did!

Girls Tennis defeated Marshall (their only two losses in the regular season), and took the Northern Region title in a match spread over two days. The teams were even after Singles (3-3) when darkness forced suspension of play. On Saturday morning TJ wrapped it up, winning two of the three Doubles matches.

Both tennis teams will host a State Quarter-Final match on Tuesday, May 26 at Mason District Park, their "home" courts. A win will put them on the road to Newport News for Semi-Finals (and hopefully Finals) scheduled for May 29 and 30.

Boys Soccer "three-peats" as Liberty District champ by defeating Stone Bridge 1-0 in the District tournament. They will host the first-round Region tournament game on Tuesday 5/19.

Girls Track & Field won the Liberty District championship handily, over the course of its two-day event.
